I see a couple folks using plastic bins for rats and mice.
HOW do you prevent them from chewing out? Do you simply replace the bin if they chew it?

im just now running into this problem with my two rats. the female, in the big plastic rubbermaid, started chewing on the edges. i think part of it may be that i separated the male so she got bored and started chewing. im still tryin to figure out how im gonna fix it...

"i have a mortal wound!"
"where? where does it hurt?"
"oh, pretty much around the big bloody spot"
"come inside. ill get the neosporin. da na na na na - NEO! ba na na na na na na - SPORIN! blee nee nee......."
especially if you use a tub like a rubbermaid or a sterilite to keep rats/mice in.. they WILL chew out givin enough time..
the key is to find a tub with almost NO inner lips for the mice/rats to get a teeth hold into.
Vanness cat litter pans work well for mice, and cement mixing tubs work well for rats. Restraunt buss tubs work well for BOTH kids as well, but are expensive in most places.
best of luck,
dan
Watch out! I already have everything in sterilite tubs and don't want to change. I keep an eye on the little buggers! I didn't have any problems until lately and those guys are now in the freezer.

I use cat litter pans for my rats and they work fine. I usually throw in something for them to chew on once in a while to keep them from getting bored and chewing the pans. I use the cardboard from paper towel and toilet paper roles, also small pieces of wood. Sometimes I'll put a small piece of PVC pipe in there, not so much for the chewing but it stops them from being bored so much. Anyways, just keep an eye on them b/c if they want to they will chew through the tubs fairly quickly.

I have seen breeders use metal wire mesh net to cover up the corners.
I don't know how to describe it. But there is like wire netting that you can buy. If you reinforce the corners with that netting stuff, it will repair corners that have been chewed through.
You see the wire netting in the image? Well, if you cut a piece of it and bend it to shape to cover up the corners that have been chewed, you can repair the bin that way.
(I borrowed the image to get the picture of the wire netting I am talking about.) You can actually get much thicker netting than that.
