need help selecting a lizard

ivegotabike Sep 12, 2004 12:40 PM

okay, I need help selecting a new lizard, I want somehing kool looking, arboreal, and that gets somwehre between 12-18 inches.... smaller owuld be okay, and prefferably, it could be kept in a reptarium or similar enclosure. I don't care if it's tame, I just want something that looks good and that I can set up a nice looking cage for. so far, I'd been thinking MHD, helmeted iguana, veiled chameleon, or maybe knight anole, possibly crested gecko or something... anyone have any of these? oh, the cage will most likely be about 3 feet high, an 18x18 floor space

Well that sounds ok. Just remember with chameleons that females tend to get eggbound or have calcium problems because of the eggs. I would also say maybe a basilisk but i dont know how long they get. And there are also some of those big skinks that are real tame. I hear knight anoles are real good pets. Good luck in your decision!!!

If you want a cool looking lizard get a tokay gecko. They are a large lizard, 10 to 14 inches and are easey to keep. The are inexpensive [20 to 30 dollers] due to there extremeley agressive personality. The enclosure which you described is perfect because they are great climbers and love heighth.

Hope this helps,
Britton

I wouldn't recommend a tokay especially if this is your first lizard, or if you want a lizard you can handle. I've kept veiled Chams before and they do great in a reptarium. I havn't had any personal experience with the others but its my understanding that night anoles also make a good pet.

well, it's not my first, rather my 8th... anyway, i don't really want anything nocturnal, and if i got one, it would be a crested gecko... so far im leaning toward graceful cham or helmeted iguana

I saw that you mentioned a veiled chameleon. If you are wanting a lizard to hold think real hard before you get them. I was going to buy one myself but after reading up on them they are very very hard to maintain. They stress at everything. You can't hold them or the stress alone will kill them. The plants to find for them to eat are hard to find. Humidity level miricle to keep up with. I agree they are very cool looking. I just wanted to share that much information with you just incase. I hope i don't offend you with what i learned myself. I am not trying to imply that you wouldn't be able to keep them yourself. I'm not saying they are not good pets but if your like me some of them are more fun to look at, lol.

yea, i don't mind it not being able to be held, and the humidity is pretty high in my house, like, 70 in the summer, so i dont think it would be as hard of me to keep the humidity up... and what do you mean about the plants for them, ficus trees?

i dont think this guy knows what hes talking about the vieled chameleon is the easiest chameleon to care for and also is the hardiest. and it eats insects not plants.
