Need help getting weight on sick Beardy

Terrifiedone Sep 12, 2004 05:25 PM

So, here's the situation. I bought my beardie 3 years ago from a very bad pet store (I was too naive at the time to realize this) and lo and behold he got very sick when he was about six months old. He stopped eating and just sat in his corner all day. We got him to the vet, and it turned out he had a heavy parasite infestation which caused liver damage as well as infected cuts under his legs (we had a bad type of sand). We gave him some shots and dewormers for a couple of weeks and they definitly helped him, but he still isn't very healthy. The vet said that because of his liver, we shouldn't feed him crickets or any live food more often than once every couple of weeks, so we started him on an all veggy diet and we've been doing that for a while now. He never liked the greens and refuses to eat very much. We feed him crickets as often as we can because he'll gobble those right up, and until recently he seemed to be at least maintaining his weight. Now he's flat out stopped eating again and he spends as much time lying in his corner as possible. I sun him as often as possible and for as long as possible (he has an outdoor cage he stays in for hours sometimes) because that has helped a lot in the past. We have a vet appointment scheduled in a couple of weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone here has any advice on getting him to eat again and gain some weight.

I adopted a pair of beardies who are really sick with pinworms and giardia. I was told to feed them baby food Chicken, squash, and sweet potatoes. They really like it and it's easy to digest. Also, try some silkworms, they are easy to digest. I also give them each pedialyte everyday with a dropper to keep them hydrated.

Would plain old electrolyte water work too? I have this great water that I drink called SmartWater, could he drink that? Also, I'd try the silkworms but he has to be primarily vegetarian because the fat in animal foods is hard on is liver. I do give him sweet potatoes, but he doesn't seem any more eager to eat them than the kale and such that I feed him.

Yes, electrolyte water will be fine
