substrate thoughts: kinda dumb

reptilefreak16 Sep 12, 2004 05:52 PM

Last night i was bored out of my mind and was thinking bout my geckos and thought about some interesting substrates.PLease let me know what you think and if there are any negatives.

I thought about foods that we could eat and digest and figured it would have to be better then sand type substrates.

Example: Take unsalted crackers of any type and put them in a food processor until its a fine sand type texture. The only thing with this is it may cause dust cause it is so fine.

Example 2: Some stores sell bread crumbs that are really fine and in containers that could cover a ten gallon tank floor.

I was thinking that any type of dry food that could be ground up might work. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

AHH NO! Your asking for mold and bacteria with those substrates. I once successfully used Alfalpha pellets but even these had to be regularly changed and really were not cost effective in my experience. They did have one advantage. They smelled kind of good and seemed to absorb odor. Your best bet is paper towels that way you can change them out after every feeding.

yeah i never took into consideration the mold....I exclusivley use paper towels. Just trying to think of a safer alternative for those who like the sand look
