Blackrat Length...

lbrat Sep 12, 2004 07:03 PM

A buddy of mine stopped down today to pic up a set of tongs so I had him hold my blackrat while I traced down his back bone with a piece of rope. Not a real reliable way to determine length cause the snake is not really relaxed, but we came up with 74".I hope he can get to the 84" (7') mark someday, though I believe he is growing pretty slowly now.

Thats a nice sized specimen!! How old is that pic?? Ive seen it before when you posted it. Got any updated pics??
Here is my KY locale black rat, I measured him the same way 3 different times and came up with 66" twice and 67" once. So I figure he is 66". He is 3 years old and still growing at a pretty decent rate. Hopin he will hit the 7' mark, only time will tell though.

Hi Brian, He's looking good. I have one that is one year older than yours, and 3 feedings ago he measured 76". I measured him by holding him about 8" to 12" at a time next to a yardstick and adding it up. I could pretty much get that much length to relax into a straight position, without stretching or popping the spine. He looks similar to Dwights breeders.
How are those MO blacks doing?

Alan
Hopefully this one will grow into one of those monster black rats!! If not, no big deal, he is super tame and doesnt get excited, except at feeding time.

The rats here in KY all are pretty close in coloration, with some variables. Some nicer than others, depending on what you like, and are a pretty hardy snake. Dwight has some nice ones for sure.

The MO black rats are doing pretty good. Male is in shed now and as soon as he sheds Ill post some pics.

I bet your guy will see the 6' mark by next year easily. He's off to a good start now. Mine was about that size a year ago.
Take care.

I believe that pic was taken last summer.Looking back at my post I noticed I made a typo on his measurement. He came in at 76" not 74".I should be getting my own digi cam soon so I can get some up-dated pics. That one of yours is off to a great start and also a good looking specimen.

Hey, why don't you guys place bets? See whose obsoleta can get to 84" the soonest. Or see whose black rat can outgrow the other's black rat. The rest of us could have betting pools. LOL

lbrat Sep 14, 2004 11:24 AM

L.O.L. With my luck he won't grow another inch!

Elaphefan Sep 14, 2004 04:17 PM

All this talk about length, sounds like some people around here are developing a case of rat snake envy. LOL

That wont work, cause I bet LBRAT's snake has already grown bigger than mine will. Thats a pretty hefty rat snake he has. Mine is no slouch, but he is still thinner. Maybe once he hits his maximum lenght, he will start putting on the pounds!! LOL
