Prolapse...help

Ralph Sep 12, 2004 07:33 PM

Hello,

My name is Rafael. I have had this green tree for about three years now. She was wild caught and took about a year to get settled in and start taking meals consistently. She now weighs a bit under 400 grams. I recently went through a deworming treatment with her because a stool test showed some parasites. It has now been about a month and a half since the last treatment.

I came home today and found that she had just defecated and there was a pink bulge coming out of her cloaca that is about a half inch long. I belive this is called prolapse. What should I do? I have never dealt with this before. Should I take her to the vet. I have misted her and am watching her to see if it'll go back in on its own.

The local pet store said that it isn't uncommon so to give her the night and wait to see if it's still there tomorrow. If it is they said to pour a sugar water solution over it and if that didn't work that to use Preparation H.

Please let me know what I should do. I'm a bit nervous. She is my first green tree and I wanted to try to mate her in a few years. Will this affect that? Will she be ok?

Thanks in advance,

Rafael

This is link to great site infor on prolapse and the gtp.

Bookmark this site, it's the best source on the net for information specifically geared toward gtps. There are other good sites of course, but Gregs is usually a great place to start.

I noted that your girl is at least 3 years old and ALMOST 400 gms. That is quite small for a girl of that age. If this is the first time she's being treated for parasites since you've had her, be certain to follow up with vet and retreat on their recommended schedule. Any positive fecal gets at least two treatments from me... if I was dealing with a wild caught animal I would probably treat then follow up running fecals regularly and treat again in about six months.

Your girl should be at least 1000 gms before thinking about trying to use her for breeding, and definitely clear for several months of any health issues. Most chondro girls reach breeding size in 3-4 years.

Thank you very much jungledancer,

I ended up spreading some swelling reducer Preperation H on the tissue and it subsided. She looks normal again. I did get to that site and it is very informative. I even ordered the book.

Yeah, she is very small for her age. She was very difficult to get to feed when I first got her. She would go on incredibly long fasts. Now she's better. Her body is starting to fill out and look healthier. I did two full weeks of treatment for parasites about three weeks apart from each other at the vets reccomendation. I recently moved however and have to find a reptile vet that will give fecal treatments.

As for breeding, this is something I don't plan to attempt for another few years. So she has planty of time to gain the weight she needs.

Thanks again,

Ralph
