Empty Tank

Hello,

I have a 29 gallon aquarium. It is taller than long. I would
like to set it up in my living room. This room is air conditioned
in the summer. The year round temperature is in the mid to
high 60s. Friends have suggested crested geckoes because they
like the cool temps.

Does this sound OK?

I have large batches of super mealworms for other herps. Can
cresteds eat those too? Any other suggestions?

The temps are a little on the cool side (better they be in the 70’s and/or the cooler temps be restricted to the winter months). But I believe they can do fine under those temps, but perhaps just be prepared for slower growth. There’s the option of a small basking area to be considered too…

As Randy (NeoScales) mentioned, those temps would probably be OK, but growth will be slower. Additionally, you will get zero to little breeding activity at those temperatures. As Randy also stated, a basking area would be a perfect fix. Just use a 25 watt "night" bulb 24 hours/day or you could put a 25 watt regular bulb on a timer for 12 hours/day.

Thanks Guys,

Let me be sure I've got it straight. All I need is a 25 watt bulb on for 12 hours? That is the smallest herp bulb I've ever used.

When I saw my first crested I thought wow what a interesting looking lizard .
When the pet store owner began telling me that live prey items were not required , in most houses heating wasnt needed and that taller cages rather than wider cage was ideal .I thought boy they will say anything to make a sale.. who ever heard of such a easy to care for reptile?
When I found out that wasnt far off the mark ,I decided these might just be the thing.Ive got a 6 year old Iguana that requires as much time as most small children ..I didnt want to go that route again.
At any rate cresteds suffer from high heat more so than from the cold . Your air conditioning is right down there so the 25watt ought to bring temps up to the low 70's which us yes..all you need.I use a 25watt red bulb on top of all my cages and I notice they will use it at night for 10-15 min and then go on and about thier buisness.
