Just wanted to know if anyone in here keeps croc monitors, if not why, I keep tegus but my little brother is doing a report on the biggest lizards kept as pets int the U.S but were having trouble finding any info or pics on the croc monitors. Anyone able to help us out with pics or information? Specifically because of their size, and also their temparament.
thank you
Tony

As far as pics go, there are hundreds of pics of Crocodile Monitors on the internet. Your best bet would be to do a google search on Crocodile Monitors, or Varanus salvadorii. There's even an image search option on google, that will turn up a ton of photos...

As for information concerning them, I'd suggest you search this forum's archived messages, as well as the pages upon pages of previous posts this year.. There is a ton of invaluable information/experiences shared by fellow keepers.. I suggest checking it out... Best of luck in your searches, perhaps some of the salvadorii keepers can throw in some advice/comments here as well... Cheers, have a good day..

There are a few komodos here in the US, and there are many many water monitors, after all the salvator gets longer and heavier. The water monitor with the record was 10ft 3 inches, as far as weight Im not sure but Ive seen obese waters at 100lbs plus at over 7ft, where as the actual record of 8ft for a croc monitor is probably no more than a 20lb animal. All depends on what you call largest, or by what source of info. Most records of crocs are mysteriously animals that were captured and got away before they could be measured or pics ever taken of, its a common theme when you read the stories about crocs over 8ft, after all they claim 9-10-12-13-15-16ft.
Not much info is available in books about crocs because they are never studied in the wild, yet for the pet trade they are captured pretty regularly.

They get much bigger than 8ft .
El Diablo , the the male that we raised to produced all of our captive born baby crocs is still alive and well and is now 10' in length . He currently resides at TigerHomes
