My mud turtle tank

CDP75 Sep 12, 2004 10:41 PM

I just set my tank up today and wanted to see what ya'll thought.
My turtles haven't gotten here yet. I'm thinking it might be awhile b/c the hurricanes.....they're coming from south florida.
I still wanted to set-up the tank so it'll be ready.

I'm getting 2 mud turtles that I'm assuming are full size or close b/c it didn't say babies or hatchlings on the order form. If they're tiny when they get here, I have another set-up for them just in case.

The tank is a 55 gal with heater, fluval filter and lights.
Here's a picture of it. What do ya'll think?

I ended up cancelling my order b/c of a very high shipping cost. There's a reptile show this weekend close by so we're going to go look. It'll save me alot of money getting 2 there.
I'm hoping they'll have some mud turtles that are big enough to put in the tank. We've been to that show alot but I don't really remember seeing any but then again we weren't looking for any.

Just incase there's not any, I'm going to search and see what other turtles would be happy in a 55 gal and not get too big. I'm writing them down and taking it with me.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know also.

Sounds good, while you are there you can look for Map turtles as well have mud and musk turtles, they all stall realatively small. Keep us updated

WWhile it may be triue that male map turtles stay relatively small, females of most species are very large animals.

Yeah, I'd think twice before mixing map turtles or sliders with musks or muds. If your muds are anything like mine, then they are pretty terratorial and aren't too fond of "tank mates." I also think Map turtles have a little bit different habitat requirements than muds or musks. Definitely do your research, don't just start mixing turtles because you think it looks cool.

I wasn't talking about mixing, i agree that is a bad idea anyway.

I ended up getting False map turtles. They're so cute!!
They were all over the tank. After a few days I made some changes and made more swimming room. They really like it now.
Here's what the tank looks like now. I also hung my light b/c it was a pain to get the lid off.

They are doing great and very friendly. They swim up to the front of the glass to see us and my dogs and cats.
I had read somewhere that they weren't great baskers but if there not swimming around, they're in their basking spot with their legs all stretch out.

I'm aware of the fact that if they're females. I'll have to upgrade the tank size. How fast do they grow?

Anyway, Here's Spot...

And here's Squiggles...It's very easy for us to tell them apart now.
