Help with Hibernation and Shedding

maddpizza Sep 12, 2004 11:59 PM

Hello! My HL shed for the first time tonight ( i have had him for a year, so i am excited!!) Is there anything i can do to help him? should i mist him with water? i am worried about toes and tails if the skin doesnt come off.....

Also, how do i get him ready for hibernation? right now he gets 12 hours of light everyday, and as many ants he can eat, and i put about 2 dozen small crickets in every other day or so (he is a very fat and active HL!)

any advice is appriciated!
thank you!

Hey man,

Congrats on the first shed.
You must have an adult HL if this is the first time it has shed.
Personally, I always let the lizard do its job as far as shedding goes. If it is as active and healthy as it sounds, the skin should come off without incident. There are logs, rocks, or something of that sort in his tank, right? They use these things as shed assistance. My advice is to wait and see how the shed goes. If you happen to notice straggling skin around the toes and tail, then a good mist might do the trick.

About hibernation, I am not well versed, as I keep my HLs outside all year. (I found them 10 miles from my house) They hibernate when it is time, and wake up when it is warm enough.
I have heard of people putting them in a low-setting freezer, but don't know many details.... So maybe Jeff or Cable can help you in these areas.

Oh, BTW, check out www.phrynosoma.com, Cable's new site. Its pretty cool. Any way, Good luck with your friend.
