Feeding question

Hetfield6J Sep 13, 2004 12:52 AM

I have been feeding my 3 month old veiled a staple of small crickets. After reading alot of advice here on the forums, i decided to try out silkworms. I ordered 100 from the net, and tried to feed him. He would not touch them at all. Tried a couple days later, same thing. When i put silks in his feeding bowl with crickets, he would get the crickets, and leave all of the silks. Later in the week i had picked up some small mealworms to feed my bearded dragon. I decieded to try to give a few to my cham, and he went nuts. I have never seen him so excited with anything. Turned real bright green, with brown spots, and was rushing after them.

Anyways... now i have a problem. He has decieded he likes mealworms so much, he doesnt want to eat anything else. I know they are a bad staple, and dont want to give him any, but now he will pretty much ignore crickets, and wait for mealworms. If I just feed crickets, he will only eat a couple a day, and looks like he is starving. Today he was looking weak, so i grabbed a mealworm and went to his cage, and he just about jumped into my hand to eat it before i even got it into his dish. Keep in mind there were crickets in his enclosure during this time.

Any ideas on what i should try? I have thought about ordering flies, but i really would like to avoid fly's if possible. Thanks for any advice.

it's a common problem...the interest in certain foods comes and goes...mine will refuse crickets for a week and will only want roaches...then he doesn't want roaches or crickets so i'll turn to hornworms or mantids

my cham has no interest in silkies either but loved hornworms...i suppose it's the color...you need to mix things up and he'll do just fine...you can try some greens also

good luck

My chameleon pretty well just eats superworms. Once in a while I will buy her crix and she'll eat a bunch, then she'll be off them again. She does eat silkies occasionally, but that was from about 8 months on. before that she wouldn't eat them if she was starving. I also give her waxworms every once in a while for variety.
