blue tongue and crocodile skink help !!!!!

dragonflygirl109 Sep 13, 2004 03:51 AM

I could use anyone's help. My blue tongue skink doesn't seem to be eating at all when i look at his food dish. He used to eat banana's out of my hand now he won't. I don't know if he isn't in a banana mood or not. He used to love his dog food now he barely touches it. He doesn't even eat his meal worms anymore nor does he eat his crickets. I don't know if it's breeding season for them and this could be the reason for his behavior. I don't know if they eat so little it's barely noticable. I don't even know what amount they should be eating. He is very active. he is very alert. He isn't loosing weight. If anyone has a blue tongue and can offer some info please pass it on and help me. Second, my croc skink is brand new. I think he is sick. Anyone who has one please pass any info you can on helping me get this little guy better. Thanks to anyone who can help.

What are your temps in his cage. You may want to entice him with some raw egg, its irresistable.

Thanks, good idea, i've tried boiled egg before but didn't seem to care for it. Then again i haven't tried it again so he might like it now. You have very beautiful BTS. It's nice to see another one so i can compare mine to how yours look. At first i thought mine had a swollen throat but he looks nothing different than the one you have. Everything down from the redness on the throat. I notice it gets redder right before they shed. Thank you for your suggestion i will try it for tomorrow's feeding. Also i did notice that mine wouldn't eat the food with the calcium powder on it. And he doesn't eat his crickets fast enough for the powder to stay on them and him to get it from them. I have bought the calcium spray and vitamin spray and he loves his food now. It's like he drinks the spray out of his food dish. I know it's not as good for him as the powder. Is it good enough to use though. Also can you give them to much calcium and nutrient spray? Is there such a thing as over doing it? His temp for his tank is upper 80's and lower 90's for basking. He stays mostly on his cool side. I also switched his bedding from some soft substrate the pet store told me to use to bark and he seems to love it better. One more last question, how do you tell the sex between them? I know i'm a pest lol i just want to make sure i'm doing it all right and it's cool to find someone who knows about them. Thanks again for your help.

Especially when shes ready to shed, she stays hidden for a while.

Also alot of lizards are begining to slow down and sleep more. My Bearded Dragon is usually in brumation by the end of sept, early Oct.

Anyway I also agree with the other forum buddy you can get alot of help on the skink ofrum as many have blue tongues.

My girl Chiquita is a large Merauke BTS ( pronouned Ma roo- key) and yeah, she gets that very pinkish under the throat color too. Shes about 23 inches and growing.

She loves her bananas, superworms, snails, cooked chicken, shredded carrots, they are her favorites.

As far as sexing its hard sometimes unless ya have the opposite to look at also, Just post a pic a good close up on the skink forum, and they will tell ya !

Heres a good site

Good luck ! Let us know how your bluey does!

Thank you for the information. It's nice to have something to compare to. I saw your BTS and she is beautiful. Mine looks just the same, throat and all, but with a more broader head. I think the males have bigger heads. I will do that though, post a picture on here and see if anyone call tell me. Like you said though it is hard without another to compare to. I didn't know you could feed them coooked chicken. That is a thought. Mine has recently started eating better. I couldn't get him to eat his food when i dusted it with the calcium powder. But he loves the spray. I know that's not as good for him but it's better than nothing. I still dust his crickets but he doesn't eat them fast enough to get the powder off of them. Thank you agian for your help. I feel so much better. I love this guy to much and don't want to do him any harm.

Lets see....

Gender ID: Its really hard to tell, USUALLY males have larger heads and thicker tail bases. As you get more experienced you may develop and eye and be able to make pretty good guesses. There are 3 definite ways to tell
1. If you see the hemi penes during defication
2. Seminal plugs
3. Put two together

Substrate: I highly reccomend using aspen or carefresh to promote their naturaul burrowing behavior. For babies you can use T shirts, rags, sheet and towels

Supplementation: You really don't need calcium stuff if you have proper diet. If you do use it I'd say weekly. I personally dont use any.

Temps: I recomend a basking spot of about 100F.

Any other questions? I'd be happy to help!!!

i love that picture, only a face a mother could love lol. Very cute. It is funny you mentioned aspen. I put some pine shavings or something like that in there long time ago when i had a little left. i wanted to see what or how he would react. Then next morning when i woke up he was buried under it. I read somewhere not to use that cause they could ingest it. I got scared and took it out. My guess is from what you said they like to bury themselves so the bark i have now i should take out. The weird thing is he's more active on this bark. I see him roaming and investigating more. I may try and mix it up a little for him. I think he likes it or i could be wrong. Either way, thank you very very much for all your help. You and everyone have helped ease me a lot. You've helped me learn a lot more than i could wondering the internet and trying to figure out what it all means.
