new baby veiled

kich4theanswer Sep 13, 2004 05:52 AM

I just bought a new babay veiled cham. today at my local reptile expo, I'll be posting a picture of my setup for your suggestions soon, but I just have a quick question. When I brought him him home for the first time he just stayed on the same branch all night long and finally has moved this mourning when the basking light went on, is this normal? Also there is a lot of foliage in there and since he's a baby I put about 150 medium sized crickets in there so he can find them, did i O.D. on crickets, should I take some of them out? Believe they are a small size cricket. Thanks for all of your help!

First of all, yes it's normal for a chameleon to just stay in one spot after going through a change. It usually takes a day or so for them to settle into their new surroundings. And yes, you over did it on the crix. First of all, crickets may tend to nibble on your baby lizard. Some people might say that it doesn't happen, but I've personally seen the eyes have been eaten out of a baby chameleon. And it doessn't have to be sick or extra fragile! Secondly, any gut-load or dusting will be gone before all the crix get eaten. If you don't want to remove them, then throw in some pieces of greens & carrots to give them something nutritious to eat.
Hope this helps,
Cricket
