Tank size for 2 Azureus - brother and sister - unsure of sex

starlightalley Sep 13, 2004 12:40 PM

I am going to apologize in advance for the long post but I am having trouble deciding what size tank to purchase for my two Azureus. I am deciding between a twenty gallon high( 24x12x16), twenty gallon long (30x12x12), twenty gallon extra high (20x10x24) or a twenty nine gallon (30x12x18). I know they aren't arboreal but they seem to like to climb anyway (hence the extra high). The long seems too short to me... I guess I am leaning towards the 20 high and the twenty nine. Could I keep three males and a female in the 29 gallon? What about the 20 high? I want to build a waterfall and a shallow stream running through it. Also- if I were to post a picture would it be possible to sex them from a pic? They both seem to have triangular or heart shaped toe pads so I am really confused here. One is smaller so i keep thinking it is a boy but as I mentioned a few posts ago I am worried that this frog is not thriving. My other one has been eating the past few days (finally) but the little guy wont eat even when I put flies right in front of him also he seems lethargic and is staying in one place all the time. If it turns out that I have a boy and a girl -hmmm...how to say this...since I know they are CB frogs but as I got them from a store I don't know the breeder but I have to assume that they are brother and sister. Common sense tells me that they should not be allowed to breed. Someone told me yesterday that it doesn't matter as much with amphibians but that sets off alarm bells in my head! Also - does anyone know of a breeder in Virginia or the Washington DC area that has a good reputation? Thanks again and appreciate any help.

I have 1 female and 3 males in a 29 gallon tank and have never witnessed fighting or any improper behavior and have had them for over one year. Just now I am starting to get eggs from the lone female which is exciting. From my perspective the 20 long or 20 high would be a good choice for a pair with the 29 being the best for space and features. I probably wouldnt go with the 20 extra tall for a pair of azureus, leucs would definitely like it better.

That was taken about 6 months ago and the tank has changed a bit due to the plant growth and the addition of a coco hut.

Thanks for the quick response. Congrats on the eggs! Exciting indeed! The photo and info on your froggies has tipped the scale for me....spacewise and being able to keep three males and a female. Beautiful tank by the way - thanks for adding that photo gives me an idea of what a 29 will look like set-up.
