exploring...

caietaro Sep 13, 2004 12:43 PM

I was just wondering if juvinile tegus ever grow out of their need to explore so much? My baby ARG. B&W tegu only wants to get down and explore when I take him out of his cage. It is usually a little bit better if he's eaten before hand but still. Do they ever grow out of their curiosity? I would love to let him just free roam around my room for an hour or two a day, but I worry about him getting wedged somewhere I wont be able to get him out, or him getting lost somewhere since he's so small still.

Thanks alot,
~Caietaro

Mine never outgrew it but they don't move as fast as they used to. It is harder to stop a 25 lb lizard from going where they want however.

Mine never have outgrown this. I still let them out to roam though. But I have three children who help keep an eye on them while they are out. But even with all those eyes on them I have still had to physically move many a piece of furniture to retrieve the little ones when it is time for them to go back into the tank. As much as I hate to say it I have even lost track of one of them for a little while but they always show back up the next day. I fund one of mine curled up in the bottom of my sleeping bag as I had come back from the field. How she made it into the stuff sack and then inside the bag and then all the way to the bottom is beyond me but she did. Most of the time though each one of mine has thier favorite place to hang out and that is where they can always be found when its time. Good luck

I got mines roaming free on my room, the older, Minos, sleep down my bed in a dog bed filed with rags, ive made him a piece of furniture with the lamps near my desk so he can go there when he needs some heat and UVB, hes pretty tamed as you can see but i have to keep the door closed if im not in my room, and from time to time i take the older to the garden, at almost 3 years with him if im not watching he tries to go out and sneak to the garden, so the answer will be "no" heh they never grow out of curiosity even if they dont live in a tank.

I live in México, and the weather its pretty good for them, thats why i keep him roaming free on my room and not in a tank, more space for them, more tamed lizards, but more cleaning for me :P

(laugh) No, they don't outgrow it, but they do eventually get big enough not to fit under every bit of furniture in the house! Babies probably should only be allowed out with strict supervision in a room like the bathroom, where there is less they can get under or up into. Contrary to what the books say, the can and do climb. (I showed Loiosh the page in the book, where it says he shouldn't climb, but he ignored it! Silly lizard. How will he learn if he won't read!_
