yea, that thing looks extremely dehydrated

SpikeNsquirt Sep 13, 2004 03:20 PM

I was being nice, that is why I was asking though. Here is one of my girls that we got as a hatchling...she was been growing like a weed. We got her in April I think it was and she was probably about 20 to 25 grams and now she is up to 70.

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 03:48 PM

lets see I got him about 2, maybe 3 weeks ago at petsmart. the first week he was picky about eating, now he's starting to pick up weight. He was really tiny when i got him, he's a juvie so i dunno how old he really is. He always has fresh water available and i always leave about 5-6 mealworms in his dish. he eats maybe a mealworm every other day and he is eating because he is pooping/peeing. maybe the mealworms are to big, i dunno. i gave him some mini meal worms and he really had no interest in them

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 03:50 PM

how does he look dehydrated? i leave a big shallow bowl of water for him (changed daily with brita filtered water,) and he has a moistbox in the cage but he never goes in it (hasn't shed either). he has vitamins and calcium in corner dishes. he has shown growth though, slow but he is growing

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 03:52 PM

oh yeah and i do gutload the mealworms

Melle Sep 13, 2004 04:01 PM

Sounds like you are doing everything correct with him. May i ask what temps you are keeping him at? He definately looks very skinny, his tail is way too thin. He should be eating a lot more than one mealworm every other day. my guess is he was just malnourished at the store. Try feeding him gutloaded crickets along with his mealworms every day and a few waxworms a week to try and bulk him up a little and get him eating more. and i would get a fecal sample to the vet to check for any parasites he may have. good luck with him! he is very cute

i have two temp guages the cool side can be anywhere between 75 (at night)and 80/85. and the warm side is 80 undertank heater. he likes the warm side alot. you think i should get some small crickets? he is picking up weight just slowly

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 04:21 PM

hm i dunno if this matters but he has a dark area under his belly. i don't think he's impacted because he was kept in a cage w/o sand. he pooped again, looked alittle runny (light brown in color?)

peachstategeckos Sep 13, 2004 04:31 PM

Wow! That's a very big blotch. I would get him checked out by a vet asap!...it's probably the reason he isn't eating. Keep us updated.

what is it?

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 04:46 PM

how do you look up vet locations?

peachstategeckos Sep 13, 2004 04:59 PM

Go to.... Herp Vet Connections scroll to the bottom of the front page and click on your state. If you can't find one maybe you can find a vet in your yellow pages and call to see if they take exotics. I'd hate for you to lose your gecko because you couldn't find a vet. Let us know if we can help anymore.

Hope your little leo is ok...That dark spot is big. I know most leos have dark spot (kidneys or lungs or liver) but not that big. Did they have him/her on sand where you bought her from? Hopefully it is nothing and your leo will be ok...keep us posted.

Rhonda

devious_froggy Sep 13, 2004 05:21 PM

The spot could just be an internal organ we dont normally see unless the gecko is extreamly skinny. which is that case with yours, i'd guess that its either from the petstore not feeding him, or that he picked up some parasites as the store. either way a vet visit should get him on the road to recovery!

well i mean he doesn't act sick, at night he's active (as active i guess as a gecko gets... you know, moves to one side of the cage and stares off, then goes to the other side of the cage, stares off. wonder to the water dish and then he sees me and freezes until i stop paying attention, then maybe he'll drink or just stand over the water dish for alittle bit... then maybe he'll go sleep in his coconut. he's pooped twice in the past 2 days... is it possible that he might just be eating really big mealworms and therefore only eats once every day or two? he's very jumpy when i handle him, so he's active and acts wide awake, not grogy or i guess "sick". He has gained alittle weight since i got him

no sand in the tank, just that green terranium turf, I have it in my cage as well at the moss stuff

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 05:25 PM

sorry, no sand in my or the petstore's

SpikeNsquirt Sep 13, 2004 05:39 PM

I'm glad to hear that, I know our PetSmart here has sand in the tank and the leos in there look like they are knocking on deaths door. Did you call the vet yet and if so what did they say? Hope all goes well.

Rhonda

gurnham4 Sep 13, 2004 05:45 PM

He's suppose to call me back before 8. I dunno the gecko doesn't act sick, i mean at night he explores and is active, i guess as active as a gecko gets.

riiotgrrl Sep 13, 2004 11:09 PM

i hope your little guy is ok. The pic alarmed me a bit too. Even juvies should not have tails as skinny as his. I am sorry that you had to find out something is most likely wrong with your new baby through the forum... I had a similar thing happen to me while i was working at petco. SOme one brought in a poor little leo that looked a bit worse than yours does for me to sex. My jaw hit the floor when i saw the thing. By that time, tho, it was too far gone and the poor dear died.

MAke sure that you get a poo sample (as best as you can) because my fear is that it is a parasite infestation. Even a bit of poo the size of a pencil eraser will work. they will be able to perscribe the best anti parasitic med for him.

Good luck with your new baby. Please get him in asap. I would also get ahold of who ever sold you him and GET THEM FIRED. Big petstores should KNOE BETTER than to sell an animal that sick. But, on the up side, they didnt just throw it in the freezer...i have seen that one WAY too many tiems...

good luck. My thoughts are with you both. please keep us posted. jen

i think it's just his liver, but i'd take him to the vet for a fecal sample anyway. if you don't have a herp vet, call up a normal vet and ask for a referral to one. he looks kind of like a snow to me. his spots won't fade, and his purple will fade a bit, but not a lot. leopard gecko patterns change a lot with age & the conditions they are kept in. i would try buying him a few silkworms online, of smaller size (maybe 1", for feeding. i get mine from californiasilkworms.com . he does look skinny, but my herp vet tells me that leos aren't supposed to get as fat as many owners try to get them to be.

The dark spot is the gall bladder i think. It gets enlarged when they are of food for an extended period of time.
With petco I would be very worried about parasite too though. Deffinetlly get a fecal check.

He is very, very thin. The tail should be thick. It is not like he is a hatching he must be over 4 months i'm pretty sureit was a male in one of the pics.
I can't belive they were selling them in that bad of shape, but hey thats petco.

good luck I hope it goes well.

The gecko came from Petsmart not Petco.. so before saying something get the facts straight.

Petco Geckos are way way way much better than petsmart.., many of us on here have bought leos from petco and have had very good results.. Some of my breeders are actually from petco and produce some killer offspring.

to the guy with the gecko.........get some waxworms to help fatten him up more quickly..increase temps..88-90

Evangelus Sep 17, 2004 12:24 AM

She made a simple pet store name mistake... =P

It sounds like you're doing everything this gecko needs, but I definitely agree.. Get this this little guy checked out by a vet(Bring in recent droppings for a fecal) and see what the results are.. Of course it will cost you, but that's what we Leo-Owners must do. Good luck! Please, keep us posted. =)

The warm side should be at least 88F. Maybe try offering small crickets as mealworms are harder to digest. Good luck.
