How would you rank in order the 10 most toxic vipers/pit vipers?
Dan
I vote the Russell's Viper as #1 most toxic.
Actually Echis carinatus, (Saw-scaled Viper), and possibly other species within the complex possess venom more toxic than Daboia russelii. As to most dangerous, that's a toss up, because both Genera take a large toll in human fatalities annually. Echis complex: approximately 10,000 fatalities. Daboia species/subspecies: approximately 5,000 fatalities.
Another Viper to keep in mind is Bitis arietans the, (Puff Adder), which is responsible for more human fatalities on the African continent than any other indigenous venomous snake.
Cheers,
Derek K.
