Pituophis catenifer catenifer, or P.c. deserticola

icedearthgoddess Sep 13, 2004 02:07 PM

Here is a pic of my gopher, and I am not sure which one he is, I got him from a friend that was not willing to take care of him anymore, so I adopted him. I am not sure because of his color variation in the middle. As you can see, he turns from dark to lighter then back to dark. I can put up better pics is anyone needs them... Thanks!

It looks like catenifer...so I agree with Dan.

Do you by chance like the band Iced Earth?

Cool, an Iced Earth fan. Does that make three of us here? She is my girlfriend, and yes, she likes the band and so do I. We went to the IE/Bodom/Evergrey show back in, well, whenever it was we were there. Ripper was great, I still prefer Barlow though.

BILLY Sep 13, 2004 08:34 PM

Yeah....I love Iced Earth! I got into them back when Horrow Show came out. Always knew who they were...but never had a chance to sit down and really check them out. Then I kicked myself for passing on an invitation to see them on the Something Wicked tour. AAAAUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Their new album is beyond incredible! Awesome tunes with substance for lyrics...something that most metal bands lack. Ripper is great for them and has done an awesome job, but I do also prefer Barlow.

I did see them on their last tour and was quite impressed. I hope they keep putting out quality music.

Take care!

Tell me you have heard the classics. I prefer Dark Saga and Something Wicked. Have you heard Dream Evil yet? They have a great metal sound too, I think the new album kills The Glorious Burden in the race for best album 2004 but doesnt top Iced Earths classic albums.

Back to snakes, I read the post on Cherry and I love his animals too. I wish he came out to cali to set up tables again. He has some truely great pits.

BILLY Sep 14, 2004 12:15 AM

The only Iced Earth I have is Alive in Athens, Something Wicked, Horrow Show, Tribute to the Gods, The Reckoning ep, and The Glorious Burden. That is not enough! I need to get ALL the other cds! And I will...trust me! I know I have a lot more cds to get from them!

Cherry does have some killer pits and I have always enjoyed seeing his tables at the shows down here in TX. I had purchased a TX bull from him a few years back. Here is a pic of her.

Take care!

OK, one more question: does Cherry go to all of the Texas shows? We are planning on moving to Texas, near Dallas, and I would love to go to a show where Cherry is. What shows are the biggest and the best in TX? I only know of the San Antonio hot show and the Arlington show, I hadnt heard of the Houston show until today.

From what I know and have seen...he has been to all the shows that I have been going to on a somewhat steady basis. Those are:

Bob Clark shows in Arlington
ETHS annual show in September, in Houston
Bayou Breeders Expos in Houston

Email him and see which other ones he may go to.

Take care!

Do you have an Iced Earth t shirt? If not, get one!!! We got a free hidebox one time for wearing Iced Earth shirts. The vendor stated he didnt have any of the large size for sale, which was what we wanted. We talked for a few about Iced Earth and he said just take it. It was cool. Every show we go to someone talks to us about Iced Earth, usually a vendor. I think a day of snakes and talking metal is perfect.

BILLY Sep 14, 2004 11:06 PM

Actually..I do have an Iced Earth shirt of the cover of The Glorious Burden. I wore that shirt on the first day of the Daytona show this year. Me and some vendor ended up talking about black metal and the local death metal scene in Florida. Then...at the ETHS show...me and Nokturnal Tom, who posts here sometimes, talked a bunch of metal as well. I have talked with a couple of vendors in the past over my Death shirts. You are right...nothing like a day of talking snakes and metal.

Take care!

Rock on! You like Death, those guys rule! I wore Hypocrisy to the last show, my girlfriend (icedearthgoddess) wore the glorious burden, so she got all of the attention. The guy liked cannibal, but not hypocrisy. I was sadden. I think Ill wear Death to the next show, always good to have another connection with vendors!

Were you there yesterday in Houston for the show? I picked up an Eastern hog and a Western hog. Take it easy bro.

Hey Andy!

I sure was there! The show was cool, wasn't it? Surprisingly, I didn't get one snake. Only the second time outta 7 times I have gone that I didn't get anything. There were some very nice snakes pits at Cherry's table. His normal southerns het for leucistic were killer! Did you check out his table?

I would have loved to meet ya and talk snakes with ya! Perhaps next time bro!~!!!!!

Who did you get your hognoses from?

Take care!

I saw the Cherry's table and loved it. My ex bought a corn snake from them. The western hog came from Jim Sargent and the eastern was from Clint at Texas Snakes. I was there pretty much until about 3 so I probably passed you a few times haha. Don't know how you resisted buying anything. I was planning on trying to stay "clean," but you know how it is. Anyway, take it easy and happy herping.

To me it looks like a catenifer with some deserticola influence.

- Semi connecting anterior blotches
- darker blotches anteriorly.
- blotches are high on the back.
- light head.

Shaun Roberson Sep 14, 2004 01:37 PM

I agree, the body and sides look to be catenifer, but the blotches near the head look like deserticola. It's likely an intergrade.

My boyfriend and I went to Whitewater a while back and found a huge gopher that looks like mine... here's a pic. We also find these same kind in the Mojave desert when we go road cruising for snakes... they seem to be quite abundant for being a mix... I guess I just find that a little odd... I could understand finding a few, but for the most part all the gophers we find look like this, with the fading in color and such... I would just think that it would be harder to find these if they are a combo, and that they would be more of a "rarity" than a common find.

The snake in the picture looks like a pure sonoran (affinis). I have a gopher from whitewater, and it looks like a san diego x greatbasin cross.

metalpest Sep 15, 2004 07:48 PM

I think the whitewater one in the photo is a san deigo X deserticola

PeeBee Sep 15, 2004 12:44 PM

Gophers tend to be relatively common throughout their range. An intergrade is an animal found where the ranges of two or more subspecies meet. Snakes found in intergrade areas show traits (influences) of the subspecies found in areas nearby. They may all look the same or can vary in pattern from one subspecies to the other. They aren't any more or less common than the pure subspecies in the adjacent areas.

There are roads to the southwest of Bakersfield, CA where you can see catenifers, deserticolas, and integrades of the two on the same road only a few miles apart. It's so important with catenifers, deserticolas, affinis, and annectans to get good locale data. It may be one of the means for correctly identifying the subspecies. There are canyons, passes, and breaks in the mountains that separate these subspecies that has allowed gene flow and crossbreeding for thousands of years. Some of these are the result of evolved integrades that have retained gene influences of the original parental stock.

Anyway, the picture of the gopher that started this thread is a catenifer.

Is the snake in the picture your's or one from Whitewater?

icedearthgoddess Sep 20, 2004 11:38 PM

The pic of the giant one all stretched out is the one from Whitewater, my gopher is posted way up at the top of all of this somewhere.
