shedding questions

rusti Sep 13, 2004 04:07 PM

I know alot about bp's, but I'm not too experienced. I have a couple questions about my bp.

her previous shedding was not so good. a couple of her scales came off. any advice?

also, in case the shedding doesnt come off in one peice, what is the problem? can it eaisily be fixed, or do I have to fork over some big bucks for a vet visit?

any additional info or advice would be helpful.

thanks

Don't know about the scales comming off. I use a large waterbowl (jumbo dog bowl at walmart They can slither in and soak. I also spray them 1-2 times a day for extra humidity. I've had great success (full sheds) using this method!

Increase the humidity during shed time. Misting it occasionally when your snake goes into shed will help it come off in one piece.

However, you need to be careful that you don't keep the snake too moist all the time. Too much moisture can cause problems too.

If you have a bad shed you can put your snake in a moistened pillow case for a couple of hours and skin will come off in the bag.

Regards.

Incomplete sheds are usually due to low humidity. You need to get a humidity guage (hygrometer) to make sure what the humidity is in the enclosure. Check out Big Apple Herpetological for $8 or $9. Humidity, during shed, needs to be 70-80 percent. This should help produce a complete shed. You can also spray, but its usually not necessary if you humidity is high enough. If your snake has an incomplete shed, a method I've read on the forum is to use a lightly damp pillow case, put the snake in for a couple of hours. The snake will move around in the pillow case and rub off most of the shed.
