stunted growth

gary1 Jun 26, 2003 06:56 AM

ello folks, this is my 1st post :-D

i recently got a corn snake from someone leaving the country , i was told they have had it for 2 years, the snake is only about 2-2.5 foot long and is still eating pinkies (2-3 a week).

when i was researching corns i thought this was weird, i thought a 2 year old male corn should be a lot bigger and eating bigger mice.i had a word with a guy in my local pet shop says he thinks its undersized and not been fed enough,he also it should be on fuzzies by now (this is what i thought from my research). ive been told to feed him a bit more often and work him upto bigger mice over the next year.

just thought i would get a second opinion on this (cant hurt)

do u think his growth has been stunted by under feeding ? and should i increase his amount of food and in time the size of mice ?

and at the end of the day will all of this make him grow to a normal size ? will he grow a bit but always be a bit small or will he not grow at all ?

looking forward to ur replies
gary

I would start feeding the snake fuzzies right away...pinkies are not the most nutritious. Also, many people have reported growth spurts after moving up to a larger mouse.

I measured my '01 okeetee just now, and he's 3 1/2 ft. He would probably be longer, but he is -just now- getting back to a regular feeding schedule. He only ate a handful of meals since December.

It does sound a bit undersized. a good meal should leave a noticable lump in the snake, like this:

Just be careful not to make the snake fat, that can do as much, if not more harm to the snake.

Good luck,

Not yet, I've got a clutch of 5 pipping now that may have one or two Butters in it. I've also got 2 more small clutches with some possibilities of Motley Butters
I still haven't started shipping yet. I can wholesale everything I hatch but I'll save the good stuff for friends and shows.

I didn't care for motleys for a while and then I started seeing things like butter motleys and cream motleys and I love'em.
Now it seems the more I see any and all motleys the more I am beginning to appreciate them.

cheers, if u never guessed this is my 1st snake lol

the pinkies arent really leaving that big a bump in him, barely noticeable, gonna go to petshop in the next couple of days and get a bit of a bigger size. quite glad i took him now if he wasnt being looked after properly.
i can keep the left over pinkies for my beardie :-D
