LordOfTheLizards Sep 13, 2004 05:16 PM

Soon I am going to have a 10 Gallon tank with nothing in it. What is a good amphibian to keep in there?

I was thinking maybe a red eye tree frog but I wanted to see you guyses opinions.

I don't know about a red eye in a ten. A baby or two maybe, but only for a while. I've never actually had a red eye tree frog but I hear that they like a lot of climbing space and need pretty big cages when they get older, especially if you have more than one. I'd suggest maybe some baby white's, I've kept a pair of adult white's tree frogs in a ten with no problems. Or if you want something a little more exotic, I'd definately go for a pair of darts. Most darts don't climb as much as red eyes so a ten gallon tank is better suited for them. My first dart set up was in a ten gallon, planted with some plants and everything.

10 is too small for almost all tree frogs, except as temperary houseing as babys. i would go with some fire belly toads or clawed frogs, maybe even some chubby frogs.

I am not experienced at rearing Tree frogs. Are you folks saying the 10gal is too small in floor space, or just to short in height for Tree Frogs? Anyway, you might want to consider one of the smaller or medium sized salamanders.

Well i have two pacific treefrogs in a ten... they have lots of vines and pothos and stuff to crawl around in. Maybe a small treefrog like that would be ok...Or fire belly toads.

I think fired bellied toads are the way to go. Most tree frogs wouldn't be comfy in a ten. A Chubby frog is another good idea

african clawed frogs ARE NOT beginner frogs, contrary to what most say. A clawed frog needs AT LEAST a 20 gallon, but they do much, much better in a 40 gallon tank, and even larger still. They just can be kept at a DENSITY of 10 gal per frog, but each needs a lot of space to swim.

Times have also changed with Xenopus. Once they were believed to need high temps, but now we are finding out that xenopus do much better at cooler temps. That is why so many are prone to bloating and red leg is because their immune systems are suppressed.

firebellied toads are your best bet, but make sure you cover the shore area with shagnum moss or they can swallow the gravel.

Dwarf frogs are ok, but they need a variety of small food items like frozen bloodworms. Do not feed them freeze dried foods. They are notorious for causing bloating disease.

If you convert your 10 gallon to a vertical tank, 1 green treefrog should be ok, but more room would probably be appreciated.
