Herping after the NARBC show..

socalherper Sep 13, 2004 05:59 PM

The Show was a fun time I finally got Brian hubbs Book.
Well afterwards I met a friend of mine (John) out in Riverside County and this is what we spotted from 6:00p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

2 Gophers LOR
2 Rubers LOR
1 Longnose Yes in Riverside County
1 Patchnose DOR & bleeding

The Highlight was a Screemer Rosy Boa LOR

All of these snakes were in the same 1 1/2 mile radius between
say 6& 10 p.m.

It was a good day full of herps.

I will post this BOA .jpg when I get it.

Man, you should have told me you were going after the show! I would have loved to go with. I have yet to see wild rubers and rosys. I was considering heading out to whitewater, but it is still too hot there. Instead, we herped locally where we have all of the mojaves and helleris. We tried to find a big helleri to test out the gentle giant tongs I picked up at the show, but all we found was a baby helleri and several DOR mojaves.

Will you be at the show in Orange on Halloween weekend? If its not too cold that night, maybe we could meet up and do some herping afterwards. I dont get many chances to herp down south, but I do plan on going to that show, so maybe we could hit some spots. If not, Ill be at NARBC next year (check out the post on it in the events forum) and maybe we could meet up then or something.

be at that show if so I will post and maybe we can find you a Ruber to see up semi close. They are awsome.

Yeah and with my new gentle giants I dont need to fear them too much. My girl is worried that if we find a big rattlesnake, my hook will be too small. It works great on the mojaves, they arent very big. Will they still be out that late in the year though? Thats what Im worried about. Is whitewater good in late Oct? I want to hit that area because there are five or six snakes there that I dont see here and everyone seems to have a lot of luck when they hunt there. All I found when I went was a gopher, king, and a decoy.

to the IRBA show in San Diego next month? It wouldn't be to far out of the way for me to get back to Bakersfield by not going the coast route. You could easily head towards Riverside from San Diego for some herping there.

Terry,
It looks possible to cruise after the show so let me know if you are coming down for sure.

No, we arent going to San Diego next month. Its too far, we will just go to the orange show halloween weekend.

There may be some young snakes out in october.
I think your chances look promising..

Young? Darn, I want to see a big ruber. According to weather.com, average low for late october in whitewater is over 60, so the temps sound good for some herps to be out around dusk.

I drove up and down Whitewater on Wed. night, but all I saw were Gay guys looking for dates. lol there were several cars of them. They seem to have taken over the road and are a little confused by the real "snake hunters" on the road. Geez, Whitewater is turning into a Padre Island, Tex. type cruise spot.

medmand Sep 14, 2004 10:10 AM

Was up there 2 weeks ago and as I was pulled over taking pictures of a Leafnose, two young bucks stopped and asked what I was doing. They were shocked to hear that there were snakes up there. There minds were definitely not on herps.

I want to get back out to whitewater when the temps are right for early evening hunts. What time where you looking? Wasnt it still real warm? I decided not to hit whitewater last weekend because I thought it was still too warm to spot anything before 2 am.

medmand Sep 14, 2004 09:10 PM

On Thursday night I started around 10:00pm, right after the rain and had a productive night. Friday and Saturday night were about the same times also. I think temps were in upper 70's low 80's.
