handling baby

newgeckogirl Sep 13, 2004 06:17 PM

I just got a crested which I'm pretty sure is still pretty young. She doesn't really like being pick up or handled and seems nervous. Will she grow out of it and settle down? Should I keep trying or just leave her alone? Any advice would be welcome.

I start handling my babies right away so that they get used to it and calm down. I talk to them very softly and stroke their boney little heads and after 5 or 10 minutes when they've figured out that 1.) I haven't eaten them and 2.) my hand/arm is warm, they usually sit still take it in. After a little while I gently return them to their enclosure. I did that with a baby which I still have & now she's full-grown (revealed itself to be a female), and she come to the top of her enclosure when I talk to her possibly because she knows I'll take her out and walk around the house with her. I talk to mine all the time, which might make it easier when I handle them, since presumably there could be something about the sound that they would recognize.

She's not hard to catch but she want to scurry up my arm or jump down or back into the tank. She just seems hyper. Do they calm down as adults? At the store that I got her, I held a leo that was full grown and very sweet and calm.

As a group, the cresties are more "gotta go, gotta go" than some other lizards, but as I said, with more frequent handling they come to tolerate it quite well. Since they love to jump, I let whoever I'm handling leap onto my down comforter a few times, for the sheer joy of taking a nice leap without fear of injuries.
