Desert Blend substrate?

turtlequest Sep 13, 2004 09:58 PM

What do you guys think about using desert blend substrate for beardies? The beardies are probably 6-8 months old. They are pretty big now, but i was wondering if impaction can still occur. For those of you who don't know (correct me if im wrong) but desert blend is a substrate of walnut shells ground up to almost the consistancy of sand.

So is it safe to use? I find that my playsand is much too dusty and clouds the beardies color.

thanks

We personally would never use crushed walnut shells for any reptiles for bedding.. impaction can be a problem and can cause problems in the digestive track and organs. Many will argue it's just fine, but we would say def no.

We use newspaper or paper towels and a lot of people use shelf liner. No chance of impaction and easy to clean and disinfect - simply remove and add fresh sheets.
