S. gottlebei breeding

opy Sep 14, 2004 02:49 AM

I have a colony of rainbow burrowing frogs that are proven breeders. I have 3 males and one female. I would love to breed them because they are fantastic frogs and a very sought after pet. Trouble is there is next to no info on breeding habits in the wild or captivity and i have been unable to contact the original keeper. I was hoping someone could help even a little.

I am not familiar with the species, but with many species (especially those with the word "burrowing" in their name as they normally come from areas with a definite dry and wet season, a brumation period is required. The frogs should be cooled and brumated for a month or two in drier, cooler than normal conditions to simulate a dormant period. After the period is over, the frogs should be misted heavily and the temperatures should be raised. Rain chambers can then be used after heavy feeding to stimulate the frogs to breed. As I said, this is with some frogs and hopefully someone can provide some more insight. Good luck and let us know if you find anything more outside of the forum.

Thanks guys that should help a bit. I was really hoping for more details than that though. Like how deep the water in the chamber should and temps and humidity levels.

Keep the water relatively shallow. If the frogs are put in too much, then drowning might occur. Right past the front "elbows" of the frog should be good just to be safe. For temps, I would just keep the same temps as the tank. The humidity in the chamber is not something I would worry about as it is supposed to be extremely high as you are having a constant water cycle in the tank.
