Going to New Mexico!!!!!!

Jmolden87 May 14, 2003 09:10 PM

Hello everyone. In July I’m going to New Mexico on a Boy Scout trip. We will be at Philmont Boy Scout camp in northern New Mexico. I’ll be taking a train to so it will be a long ride (I live in Indiana). I’ve never been in the western part of the country so it should be an enjoyable ride. If I can stay awake. We will be hiking in the mountains about 10-15 miles a day with like 80-pound packs for a week straight. That’s the bad part, but the good part is that I will see some nice scenery, wildlife, and hopefully that wildlife includes Hognose snakes! I am also looking forward to seeing other types of reptiles that are not so common around here. It’s going to be tough, but it should be fun. If anyone has any tips for spotting hognose snakes or other reptiles please share. If I can get some photographs I will post them. But I don’t think I’ll be able to take our nice camera with because we have to pack light. Plus my mom would be real mad if I ruined her $500 camera. Has anybody else been in this area? What’s it like? It's still a ways away, but I'm getting anxious. Thanks.

Hognosed Snakes don't live in the mountains of Northern New Mexico. They are typically found lower down (in elevation) in the desert grasslands and dune areas. The mountains are generally too cool and rocky, depending on where the scout camp is.

Well I should be in some different areas in New Mexico besides the main trip. I planed this trip before I was even into western hognose snakes anyway so it's not the main reason I'm going. I'm pretty sure I will see some cool reptiles while I am there.
