How Often is it safe to refreeze dinner???.............

diggy415 Sep 14, 2004 09:30 AM

I was wondering if anyone found an article on line in regards to freezing and refreezing dinner for snakes that won't eat. My other snake won't eat and did this 3 times and i have a vacuum sealer for it and the rat looks good.

How long has it been sitting out? After a matter of a few hours the rat/mouse will start decomposition and I wouldnt just to be on the safe side - you're looking at maybe a $1 mouse (full grown) or a 20 cent pinky to be saving when it could potentially kill your very expensive snake. I think the risks way outweigh the costs on this one. I have a vacuum sealer as well...I bought it for the sole purpose that I can split up bags of frozen mice and they wont go bad as fast - buy more at one time and save on shipping.

My posts are my opinion only. What you end up doing is your own choice. I will not be held liable for any negative outcome of my advice. (However I will never intentionally give bad advice. My advice is ALWAYS geared towards a positive outcome.)

Sorry, don't know of any articles but I apply the same rules to snake food as my own food (no, I don't eat mice! LOL!). In other words, I wouldn't refreeze. When I use f/t, I warm the body above room temp... that starts decomposition faster. When you refreeze, bacteria can't continue decomposing the mouse but the meat is still "bad" and will be tainted when you thaw it again. I figure the price of a mouse/rat isn't worth my valuable animsls getting sick.

One of the nice things about having 13 snakes...If somebody does not want theirs...someone else is usually happy to have seconds.
Also, this time of year (when the shorter days are causing some to skip meals) I thaw far fewer rodents than I have snakes. The other day I thawed ONE rat. All of my larger ratsnakes decided they were not hungry, so my largest corn gladly accepted it.

Mine are all chowing like hogs.It is nice when you have a few garbage disposals as pets.Mine will start to eat smaller prey mid November. Then my males will stop eating alltogether till the magic of love wears off.Ive also noticed my snakes get a little more on edge this time of year.Have you ever noticed this with yours?

i raise my own and found that the rats don't fall apart when i freeze refreeze them if someone is not hungry but now that my litters are on the rise i guess i can afford to do a one time deal. I have a large BCI and a baby and 4 baby corns so when the big one doesn't eat the small one can't eat that large, and she shed on the 20th and still won't eat so i think its breeding time although she won't be bred until next month. Interesting how they go off feed, fustrating too.

Ya know...I hadn't really noticed. They seem more active during the warmer months in general, of course...And that certainly includes when I am handling them. Most of my snakes are real pussycats...Even my Texas Rats. The baby ones and the garters are the only ones that even thrash around for a moment or two when I first pick them up. I have been pretty lucky with both the disposition and health of all my snakes so far (knock wood).
I think I'm gonna TRY to hold the line at 13, although there are still a few on my wishlist which I will probably wind up with. Duffy

I have refrozen some mice and fuzzies. Only ONCE. If my snakes don't eat right away or within like a half hour then I will refreeze it once. I have never had a problem or a sick snake. If after the second try with same food item then I will toss it.

I've done the exact same - only if it's been out for less than 1/2 hour, and I only refreeze once.
