Spice's last day outside...

johne Sep 14, 2004 09:46 AM

Time to take in the lizards. I kept all my collareds outside since early May this year. It was a great break from buying crickets, and also a great break from breeding. Some breeding took place, but I never seen it. While chasing down my lizards, I did find two viable eggs under a rock. This was pretty neat. I guess it is possible I might see a hatchling out there sometime...who knows.

So, it's back to buying crickets and superworms. In case anyone has wondered, I don't have any bluestar collareds anymore. I sold the last of those off last last year. If anyone is interested, I can always get back into contact with my friend in Chicago to see what he has left, of the original bluestars.

This is Spice...my smallest female collared. She laid three bad eggs the first year I had her, then has not produced since then. Still she is getting quite pretty, don't you think.

Her legs are very greenish now, and she exhibits so much orange across her body. She is very tolerant of handling too...

Do they just eat what comes around? I put Critter (Last year I caught two males. One, Godzilla, died, Critter was the other one.) Outside in his wire mesh cage. He seemed especially shy for a few days, they one sunny day he didn't bask, so I went in looking for him and he wasn't anywhere to be found. While he was in there the wild crickets seemed to like hanging around the cage, so he got plenty to eat.

I have it planted with flower producing plants, and it attracts lots of insects in the Spring. In the summer, I hang a Japanese beetle trap pheremone disc in the pen, which attracts countless beetles to the area. The lizards love those things! I have witnessed countless mid-air catches. It is so interesting to watch them. I do have a lid, but the top consists of very fine plastic mesh, like bird netting. It keeps out birds, and allows any insects, and plenty of sunshine to make it in. Since I have two males, I had to keep rotating them in and out of the pen. I'd give one male a week or two outside, while the other stayed inside. IT worked out very well this way.

Thanks Scott...

But DonC might be able to show you what one looks like. They are basically pastel blue collared, with little to no yellow on them...just white spots. The term "Bluestar" was coined by Mike McCambridge in Chicago, Il. I was fortunate enough to get a trio of them from him about 3 or 4 years ago. I bred them for a couple years, then replaced them with my current lizards. I don't think Mike bred any this year. He is supposed to be getting Eve a large adult female I think, so she may be your only source.
