How long should stain dry on a wood cage before....???

Psylynt Sep 14, 2004 10:29 AM

I've recently built a vivarium composed of wood & glass. The 'outside' (only) is stained. The enclosure has a screen roof... Was wondering how long should I let the enclosure sit before it's safe to put my crested geckos inside. I stained it twice Saturday (today is Tuesday). I had a fan blow on it all day Sunday to help the drying process.

I'm not all that familiar w/ the sensitivity of a crested gecko's smell. I'd bet that it is more than a person's. I can hardly smell the stain on the enclosure (as of last night). Has anyone had any experience with a situation like this? Any help is appreicated. Thanks.

You should also coat the cage with some type of sealer such as polyurethane to protect your work. Since it's the outside I would wait about 3 days to ensure it dries fully. If it's on the inside I would wait 1-2 weeks. Don't shortcut the inside if you care about your animals, the smell can be overwhelming.
