HELP...mosquito problem in boxie pen

kellywood23 Sep 14, 2004 11:03 AM

Has anyone else had a problem like this? If so, how does one go about erradicating these awful bloodsuckers without hurting the box turtles?

The mosquito's are most likely breeding in standing water that is within your box turtle pen. There are two ways the solve this one you need to circulate the water mosquito's will not breed in nonstanding water. Or you can buy feeder fish they will eat most of the mosquito larva before they can develop all the way. You can circulate the water by putting a small pump or filter in the cage. However, I don't think that mosquito's are bothering the turtles.

Well, the only standing water that I have in the enclosure is their water bowl, which is a small cat litter box. I clean it out everyday to make sure they do not have a chance to breed in it.

My hubby thinks I am just keeping the pen too wet. Could this be the culprit even though there is no standing water?

I wouldn't worry about it. They have to contend with them in the wild. And while they attack me when I'm in my box turtle pen, I've never seen one on a turtle.

LOL, actually, being on me was the concern. LOL I have noticed that they never do bother the boxies, but I am just getting swarmed by them.

Of course, normally, I would not worry about it, but with this whole west nile virus thing, I get a little paranoid now.

I know what you are saying I have my box turtles outside and everynight when i get home from work I go out and watch them. The mosquitos are relentless. I really don't think they bother the turtles though. If you clean the water out everyday then mosquito larvae won't have time to develop. Odds are there is nothing you can do about the mosquitoes with all the rain this season(on east coast) mosquitoes are going to be all over the place. You can try getting tiki torches and light them when you are out there. Mosquitoes hate fire and smoke

... some citties on the westcoasts, local vector desease controls might be able to refill them for you every 3 months if you have ponds and puddles
