hatchling Regal Ringneck--I'm in for it now....

kw53 Sep 14, 2004 02:31 PM

A friend just hatched out two Regal Ringnecks from a female that was collected gravid. The hatchlings are large, about the size of a half-grown Northern Ringneck. Regals eat smaller snakes and lizards in the wild, but usually switch to defrosted pink and fuzzy mice in captivity. Luckily, I had just collected a supply of hatchling lizards to feed some other baby snakes, so I have something to offer this one when it sheds its post-hatching shed.

I take on plenty of "advanced" snakes, like hatchling graybands and baby Mountain Kings, but we'll see if I've nibbled off more than I can chew this time. If I can get the baby Ringneck past a certain size, I can try to get it feeding on pinky mice. I'll try to find time to film it pretty soon. Interesting--the ventral surface is not yellow yet, and heavily speckled.

Hey, congrats, I have been trying to tell people that they are huge compared to neonate northerns, I have a close to 3 year old northern that is almost smaller than my baby regal. Mine takes down small snakes with no trouble, and often eats another snake before it's last is fully digested. I tried to get a pic of my regal compared to a neonate northern, they were both the same ago at the time, but the pics I took turned out bad. "regalringneck" said that when his first hatched out, their bellies weren't yellow and their tails were a pinkish color. It's belly will turn yellow within a week, probably after it's first shed.
I'm interested in seeing pics as well, so post em' when you get em'. If lizards don't work, try small snakes, on the first day I got mine, within 20 minutes, it was feeding on another small snake that happened to be in the tank with it.
