What kind of python to get...

kthulhu Sep 14, 2004 03:16 PM

I've been seriously considering getting a new snake, and are really interested in getting a python(or maybe an amazon tree boa). I dont have any experience with keeping pythons, though i have had kingsnakes, chameleons, geckos etc. I spend most of my time a college and am looking for something that doesnt need too big of a cage(I plan on trying to build my own to save some money). I'm not really interested in ball pythons as i would like something a little more exotic. Something that doesnt mind handling would be a plus too. I've been looking at spotted pythons and ringed pythons. Blood pythons are cool, but i'm afraid they would require too big of a cage. Any information/suggestion would be greatly appreciated...thanx in advance.

If you've been considering Spotted Pythons I would say that's a really good choice and likely to be a docile and hardy starter for your entry into pythons. Ringed Pythons are really cool, however I seem to recall reading or hearing somewhere that the hatchlings can be difficult to get started feeding on pinkies. I may be mistaken though. Blood Pythons and their assorted relatives get too big.
