EGYPTIAN COBRAS

twilightfade212 Sep 14, 2004 05:35 PM

I was wondering how dangerous a bite from an Egyptian Cobra is because I am thinking about getting one. Thanks for the help.

Not that long ago, an owner here in Minnesota was bitten twice by his Egyptian; he was critical but survived. Chad is right.

Chad gave the simplest answer, which is often times the best one, but I will elaborate a little more...Having never kept this species, this is anecdotal information, but accurate none the less...

Toxicity-wise, they are highly dangerous, and they can deliver much more venom in a bite then the lethal dose.

Temperment runs the spectrum from puppy-dog tame (not that you should EVER let your guard down) to Satan incarnate.

If you decide to get this species, you should definately locate a reliable source (NOT A ZOO!) for SAIMR polyvalent AV. Better yet, stock some yourself. From what I've heard, this is a pretty effective AV against haje bites.

They can get quite large, so you should be confident in your skills to deal with a large, potentially aggressive, and very deadly elapid.

Good luck,

If you talk to that guy, tell him I said hi. I wont mention his name, because I think he's as liked as me by the professionals on these forums..LOL. Oh well, can't make everybody happy.

Take care,

How goes it, my friend? Actually, I wouldn't know the guy if he was directly in front of me; I just remember the article in the paper. Maybe we can hook up at a Hamburg show down the road.

Sorry, for some reason I thought you knew him (I haven't talked to him for a couple of years). I'm always at the Hamburg show, so if you get the chance to go let me know.

Thanks,

Not you again!

Since you obviously a total novice when it comes to all of the HOT snakes. I again advise you not to keep any HOT snakes till you get some basic knowledge about them and some experience under the supervision who is experienced. Myself and others have cationed you in the "Viper" forum that you don't seem qualified to handle/ keep venomous snakes.

In a thread on the viper forum this person asked the same question about Eyelash & Rhino vipers for those of you that answered this thread.

I have a Naja haje that is quite pissy. The bite from this snake could cause death if there is no antivenom available w/in 30 min. to an hour. Although cobras are easy to take care of they are a bit runny on a hook and get rather large. If you have no experience w/venomous I suggest you start w/a small viper like a Crotalus l. lepidus. These have quite a dangerous bite as well but are much smaller and from my experience easier to deal with. You should, however, be able to find any of this information on the net. It seems people dont like you here. I want to wish you good luck and be extra careful. You know keeping venomous snakes is safer than driving a car. You are in complete control of what happens to you w/your snake. Again good luck!!!!
