uvb rays through water

ieatsnails Sep 14, 2004 06:15 PM

my turtle doesnt like to bask a lot on the rocks and things coming out of the water surface, he mainly keeps his body in the water with head out.

uvb is across the length of the tank - is he getting the rays he needs through the water?

i dont know if the rays go through water....but maybe the air temp around the aquarium is cold. i know that if the air isnt warm...my turtle doesnt bask. maybe its the same thing with your turtle?

the aquarium water is usually around 80 degrees (ive got tropical fish in there as well) and I have basking heat lamps on two different land areas. he has the option to get out of the water and away from the heat also.

i guess if you spend so much time creating land docks, they never want to come up out of the water, just to piss you off

i havent noticed any problematic signs from a lack of uvb, it just crossed my mind and i wondered if anyone has heard of depth percentages of uvb rays. tried to search on the internet and all i found was how strong it gets filtered with screens and certain glass

on these land docks...is any part of it under water? that will help him to get up. also do you have a basking spot directly on this? how big is the bulb and how far away is it? If it's a 50 watt you need it a good foot away from the actual spot or it will be too hot and he wont want to be out there. Thats the first thing i'd check.

but what size aquarium do you have him in? The UV-B will go approx 1 foot into the water.

the tank is a standard 90 gallon and i've got 3 land areas on the surface. one is the actual zoo med (i think) "turtle dock" and the other two areas that come out of the water are made from stacked slate rock, so he can climb up the stepped rock.

so he can easily walk on everything but the only reason he ever comes completely out onto the docks are to eat food i put up there (i drop the actual floating turtle food in the water as well, he just eats his meats and veggies up there)

both areas of land made from the slate rock have the 50 watt bulbs pointing on them, but they are closer to 7 or 8 inches away from the land. i did give him the option though to get out onto the turtle dock without a basking light pointing down on him. i dont know what else to try.

i took your advice though and moved both lights a little farther away so we'll see...

Probably the reason hes not basking is the water temp is so warm. Or perhaps hes basking when youre not looking. My turtle only basks when Im gone. I only see him jump in the water when i open the front door. If the air out of the water is too cool, you can increase the temp and humidity by using a canopy hood. Mine on the 120 gal is pictured below.

UVB will penetrate a few inches into the water.
