Hey forum, what type of boa is this?

CaptainHook2 Sep 14, 2004 07:06 PM

I stick to the Burm forum cuz I know all ya'll.

A friend of mine deployed to Panama in the mid 80's and picked this guy up from a fence during a perimeter patrol. He snuck it into the country in a canteen. It grew to more than 5 feet and in the late 80's he gave it to me. I eventually got orders to Italy and sold it to a school, which by the way had an animal collection in ONE classroom that would floor all of you. This was the only snake to ever bite me. Being wild caught from the Jungle I was nervous for awhile until I realized nothing was falling off and I didn't die. I think I was 21 when this picture was taken. I am now an old man of 35. I never found out what kind of snake it was. Can anyone here tell me?

Looks like a standard columbian (boa constrictor constrictor, I think). I might be wrong but that would be my best guess. Todd

Thanx!

If his friend collected it in Panama, how can it be a Columbian boa. Columbian boas are Common boas (boa constrictor imperator) from Columbia. This is a Common boa (Bci) from Panama. Same species....different locale. Not tryin to sound like an ass, but boa people are pretty picky about this stuff.

Yeah you are correct on the scientific name error I made. It was late and I wasn't thinking clearly. I grew up knowing common boas as Columbian but you are probably more accurate in refering to them as common with a locale specific. Thanks for the correction. Todd
