Kingsnake Not Eating!

kta Sep 14, 2004 07:15 PM

I have a baby cali king. It has been feeding extremely well since ive had it, sucesfully eating the 2 fluffs that I offer it. All of a sudden it is not interested in food. It started last week when it ate the first mouse no problem, but completely ignored the 2nd one. It seemed to be more interested in keeping an eye on me than eating. This week it hasnt even eaten one, it completely ignores the mouse as if it wasnt there. The snake is still very active, trying to escape, and snapping at my hands when I move the mouse around to encourage it to eat. I have tried picking up the snake and lowering it so its nose is right by the mouse but it ignores it. As a last resort I also tried putting the mouse and snake into a container and leaving them for a couple of hours. When I went back the mouse hadnt been touched.

I have no idea what the problem is, I havnt changed his enclosure or heat or type of food or anything else. These are the same F/TH mice it has been eating before.

Any help really appreciated!

how often are you trying to feed it? I have a tangerine honduran that will sometimes eat 3 fuzzies and sometimes only 2. Even my corn will sometimes eat 2 or just 1 adult mouse.
Could be he just isn't hungry.
Every 7-10 days is the recommended feeding schedule. Sometimes even 14 days.

For some reason, keepers think that snakes have to eat on schedule every time we throw food at them. Well, they don't have to eat every time we try. Sometimes they skip a meal. And during some seasons, snakes will go off feed altogether. For example, now. Most Cal kings will stop eating around now expecting the Winter cooldown. Usually this is the case for a snake that is at or older than a year. Babies will often eat through the year without stopping.

Make sure temps are correct, and this includes not too warm. If the snake continues not to feed in the next 3 weeks and isn't in a shed cycle, cool the cage to 60-ish deg F and darken it. Give the snake fresh water but don't feed it. Warm it back up in Feb.

depending on the size of your snake i'd try a pinky when your king feels picky. some of my snakes will eat a fuzzy or a hopper every week for a month but then will regurgitate any more until i switch to pinks. also don't handle your snake for a few days before trying. if that doesn't work dip a pinky in the juice drained from a can of tuna and then try. if that still doesn't work you may have to brain a pinky before offering it or try live. also pay attention to your snake (does it flick its tongue and move easily? etc.) keep an eye on it and if it becomes emaciated look to make sure there's no broken ribs or other signs of injury or illness. (lumpy looking body, blisters, etc) if none of this works it may hibernate for awhile but if it loses some weight call a reptile dealer. if they are a good one they'll take your snake for a week and try to get it to eat. i've had to do this with two of mine and both came back with the biggest appetites they've ever had. good luck
