Pseustis Sulphureus have Hatched!!

TomD Sep 14, 2004 07:22 PM

Finally after two months and two weeks and two hurricanes they hatched. It was a great sight to see them come out of the eggs. They seemed to be much more tired and wiped out by the ordeal than spiloties. But they have come back and are puffing up already. So far I have four good looking babies. Has anyone else hatched these guys out?

what are they?

This is a large racer like species from south and central america. They are very much like spiloties in size and temperament. The big difference with north american racers is their size and ability to take rodents as prey. My adults are 6 and 7 feet long and take medium sized live rats. They sometimes go by the common name "puffing snake" which is only semi accurate. They are not the only snake that puffs up when scared, but they do inflate their throat significantly. Here is a picture of the adult female.

bit of a 'tude, looks like. Are they actually racers/whipsnakes, or something else? She reminds me of the Coppertail Ratsnake from Asia.

Looks almost identical to spilotes pullattus (tiger rat). Not really a rat snake, I'm not sure where they actually fit in. I noticed you have Eastern Coachwhips, I just aquired a pair of CD easterns myself, we'll have to compare notes.

Good Luck
John
