What would you call this snake?

san_antonio_tx Sep 14, 2004 07:51 PM

Wild caught marcianus from San Antonio Texas...
the other snake is a "typical" animal from the same locality
is it a) hypo? b) just plain aberrant? c) something else (what?)

It's ErikNM's snake!

I think he released the similar-looking one he found; he probably has pictures still on his site somewhere. Same locale? Could be the same snake, just older now.

It's exactly the same snake. We have already compared Erik's photos to the live snake. Erik found it 18 months ago, and released 17 months ago (approx).

That's not the only one like it I've seen in that field either in the past 30 years (yes I've been scouting that field since I rode a 10 speed bicycle). I do not know what the chances are of re-finding that one instead of a different one, but I think it's high time I bought a lottery ticket

Now what is it? I'm going to stick with HYpo I guess.

I remember Erik showing me pictures of that...It is a beauty of a snake. I guess I would say hypo because it looks totally different than the checkered I had. But either way, it is an amazing snake. Did you keep it or release it after pics?

I kept it because the Field is being Bulldozed and cleared as we speak. I picked up two normals from the field this morning as the bulldozers were pulling up. A real heart breaker. Bye Bye Bexar county calligaster

I'm heartbroken to hear that. I was amazed at the diversity of herpetofauna in that little area. Do the bulldozer drivers have their huntin' licenses? I guess it's OK to plow them under, but you can't catch, breed, and sell them without a lot of paperwork and money.

I sound too much like Fundad!

P.S. I was just trying to be funny about my garter-ErikNM connection--cool that I was right after all! (doesn't happen that often)
