Fattening my skinny gecko

gurnham4 Sep 14, 2004 08:18 PM

I've been suggested to use waxworms, silk worms and butterworms. Waxworms are easy to get but they can be adictive. that can be controlled if i give the gecko one of these or two of these a week. I can get these at a store

silkworms seem to be ideal but are EXPENSIVE to keep and to buy, plus they need to be shipped.

Butterworms seems reasonable but I'd have to get them shipped

On a positive note my gecko ate another big mealworm last night. Got it crickets but doesn't seem to be interested in them at the moment.

I know a lot of people have their own ways of fattening up leos, and some people won't agree with me. I don't believe in them getting "addicted" to wax worms, they just get VERY picky when they get too many. Think of it this way, If you let a kid eat cookies for dinner everyday and then try to get him to eat brocoli instead, he's going to refuse. He's not addicted to cookies, He's just spoiled.
I don't use wax worms to fatten them up because they don't have any nutrition. After talking to a lot of breeders of different types of herps, I've learned that really nutrisious foods fattens them up in a healtier way. This means gutloaded mealworms (silk worms are better though).
When one of my girls got sick she lost half her body weight before the infection was gone. After a strict diet of Ca and Vit. dusted gian mealies she has already gained most of it back.

i gutload alllll the time my mealworms, but it's still early i've barely had the gecko for more than 2 weeks. Do you know where I can get silk worms at a reasonable price? and if so can you feed them gutload or do you have to buy that expensive silk worm stuff
