New to tortoises, I have a few quick questions......

TheFrogGuy Sep 14, 2004 08:39 PM

Hello, I have done a good job caring for a few reptiles and amphibians in the past, including veiled chameleons and dart frogs an a few others. I have become interested in tortoises. I've been doing some research, but a lot of the information contradicts other information. Can anyone help me pick out a good tortoise to start with? I want something that is attractive, and not too terribly pricey. From what I've found so far, I'm pretty interested in the leopard and the redfoot. Not so interested in the russian tortoise. Anyone have any suggestions?

If you live where your tortoise can be outside where it is warm and humid.. then redfoot is the way to go. Really friendly.. easy to care for.. and NOT pricey!!

You're welcome to contact me direct.. maybe I can help.

You gotta love 'em!

ok u have no other tortoises nut u have a egyptian ? that is the worse possible tortoise for a beginner i have not been able to find 1 for sale for the last month egyptian tortoises are NOT for the beginner there small size and tough houseing and feeding requirements make them one of the hardest tortoises to work with

i doubt that you would be so quick to write off the russian tortoise if you saw what the captive bred individuals look like and you got to know their personalities. bright, interactive, and robust.

behaviorally, the russians surpass several of the more popular "beautiful" species. but hey, i'm biased -- i breed them.

I do only have my egyptian but to tell you the truth I dont really have to pay much attention to him anyway.

Do you have one? If not, please don't listen to the myths of how difficult they are.

How are they hard to house?

How are the hard to feed? You need a variety of grasses and hays and proper calcium and thats really it.

I spend probably a total of 3 minutes a day caring for him and hes thrived for years.

Note that I am a teen, with School, Work, Sports, and a gazillion herps, ferrets, parrots, and other pets.

As a rule Egyptian Tortoises are delicate and difficult. If you are lucky enough to hit the proper conditions for your area they can be less difficult. The idea is to hit those conditions before the animal dies. As a first tortoise they can be very rewarding or a major heart breaker depending on if you are lucky or not.
