What are the odds...

lizgirl17 Sep 14, 2004 09:53 PM

What are the odds of hatching a dwarf leo. One of my babies hatched out two months ago today (The other egg in the clutch didn't make it). I dubbed him "Nubby". When he hatched out he was not only very small, but had a short stocky body, a short fat tail, a round arched head, and very very short digits on all four feet. Two half sibs hatched out within two days or him and were at least one and a half times his size. Today he is four inches long, still has a short stocky body and tail, round head and short digits. He weighs 9 grams, but his tail and body are fat and he eats liek a cow. He is housed alone so he has never been picked on, or intimidated. His meals are regularly dusted and he eats min mealies and crix. His full sib, which is three weeks younger, is more than half an inch longer and weighs 15 grams. The dad is over 70 grams and 9 1/2 inches long. The mom is 8 1/2 inches long and over 50 grams (she lost weight during breeding season. So what do you all think?

I didn't think there were any other dawrf leos out there. A baby leo i got 5 years ago didn't grow much and even now at 5 yrs she is still only 5" long full tail and all. She use to be housed seperatly but she can hold her own now in the community tank, (all females). All i can say is mine seems to be living a good live and eats more then alot of the normal size ones.

I have a new leo named Mr.Crowley. He lives in a 20 gallon long tank all by himself. Here is a picture of him if you go to the url below...

He is very cute! the only way you could know for sure is to breed him and see if his offfspring show the trail, or are het for it. that would take a lot of work and i wouldnt reccomend it if his quality of life was low, but if he seems happy and healthy, so if you are into scientific experementing...

Thanks for all the cmplements. I thought about a breeding experiment, but I still don't know it if is male or female. If it's a girl I wouldn't take the risk of her getting egg bound due to her size. Also wether it's a male or female, I don't know if this trait would effect the health of the offspring. My goal is to produce new and different leos, but I don't want to risk weakening the species, or the health of my little cutie. So instead He's going to a friend of mine where he will live out a long, happy life as a spoiled rotten...special...little leo!
