green tree frogs - help! wont eat!

mrblackmetal Sep 14, 2004 10:15 PM

Ok - so I have three green tree frogs - and as of last week i noticed they arent eating - i have been feeding them small crickets - and usually they jump for them. After not feeding them for a few days (i figured they had their fill and werent hungry) - i dumped 5 crickets in there - none of the frogs are eating - or have been for almost a week now. They look like they are getting weaker - what do i do!
i keep the temp aroud 80 with an under-tank heater - and have a UV light on them as of today

prior to that i had an overhead lightheat at 80 degrees.

I use ecosoil - and pretty much thats my tank

what do i do?

nope...
but they are weak - they wont even cling to the glass anymore - they cant really jump anymore either - they are clearly dying so i have no idea what to do

HMMM... My wtf did this once. I took him(Faygo) and let him swim in warm water. Make sure he doesnt drown. I put my hand under my frog and let him just float and kick his legs while i supported him form the bottom. This helped him and his immune system to fight back. He is better now and eats and is healthy. Hope this helps. O and once ur frog get tired dont force him to swim longer. Take him out or he will b stressed.

ok - so he bloated up like a balloon - then convlused for about 5 mins - beanding backwords (snapping his spine) - and he died.
my other frog is also bloating like a balloon now

I change their cage soil stuff every 4 days and water daily.

what do i do?

Are you sure the AIR temp is 80? I think UTH do NOTHING for treefrogs at all. They only heat up the bottom of the tank not the top area of the tank where treefrogs like.
Were they okay before you switched to UTH? Check the temp were they are not the bottom tank temp.
If temp is okay and the tank is clean maybe some type of spray, chemical got into their tank or the water you mist them with?

mrblackmetal Sep 19, 2004 01:55 AM

i actually used that under tank heater for about a day and went back to an overhead - temps at about 80 - 85.

they are bloated like a balloon one minute - then fine the next - but they still dont eat.

one died last night as i posted before - it convulsed alot - it was weird.

Lia Sep 19, 2004 04:28 PM

Wow sory to hear they are still bloating. I know that on this board some use UTH but I know they do nothing for raising air temps for treefrogs they are just for the immediate bottom of the tank.
I have no idea what could be wrong with your frogs. The only thing I thought of was maybe some chemical got in there from a spray or the water you mist them with.
Let us know what finally happened.

1). What type of water are you using?
2). Depending on your local climate you could try keeping them at room temps if they are around 75 for a week.

Usually the convulsions and leg extensions are a sign of toxing out.One of the easiest is contaminated misting water or soaking water. If you are not using a bottled spring water i would suggest trying that.

I hope they snap out of it,

Good luck and keep us informed.
