Question for the Rainbow Breeders...

muahdib4 Sep 14, 2004 11:27 PM

Are there any signs to watch for to see if a Colombian Rainbow is pregnant? I picked up a breeding age pair a couple of months ago and both were real tame. They had been housed together for a little over a month while I was getting the new enclosure for the male and now the female is getting more aggressive. She's now striking the glass occasionally when I go into the room. She hasn't bitten me yet when I handle her but the sudden change in behavior has me wondering. She's always fed voraciously so she isn't eating any more than she was but while they were together, the male didn't seem to excited about feeding. He did eat but only about 1-2 times during that month. I've just seperated them today. Any info would be appreciated and if you need any more info, just ask.

With my Colombian Rainbows a continued strong feeding response in a female was a sure sign that she was not gravid.
Good luck,
Jeff

By strong feeding response do you mean they don't eat at all or not aggressively, heavily? I have female BRB I was pretty sure is gravid but she does eat, not as much or aggresively but she does eat.

Color me puzzeled

BigT,
...All of the rainbow subspecies that I have bred the females ate 3 or fewer small meals during the 5 to 6 month gravidity. Many of them have gone the entire gravidity without eating.
Good luck
Jeff
