UPDATE on me Tegu

shad925 Jun 26, 2003 10:32 AM

Y'all probably don't remember my situation...I have a black and white Argentine Tegu. He was not shedding...When I first got him in March he had just finished shedding...Then he never shed and actually never grew. I would spray down the cage and have a full water bowl everyday. I think it may have stunted his growth. Is this possible? I know he was getting enough calcium for sure...How often do young tegus shed??? He was 2 months when I got him..now hes around 5 months..He still is probably 14 inches (w/o tail). For the past month I have been soaking him in water couple times a day and pretty much just pouring water in his cage. Well finally yesterday he shed. His feet are getting much better (they were all cut up from the circulation being cut off, that is also healing well and still work in progress)...He looks so great and healthy now that he shed. I was wondering what kind of fruit should i feed him (I heard its good for shedding and for his skin)? Is it a special vitamin he needs? I tried powdering a mouse but that didnt work, he killed it and then spit it out, he hated that. I have also "tricked" him before by when hes scarfing down the mouse I quickly powder it a little as he chews. He also eats only small mice right now...I hope thats okay...Any suggestions?

Hey shad of course I remember your situation I was wondering how he's been. Glad to hear he finally shed! The only time I’ve had shedding problems was when I first got mine I didn’t use a Rubbermaid box mostly filled with moist mulch. They still don’t eat much fruit except for what little I mix with sdz. I don’t think they need as much vit c to shed like the reds do. If you have mercury vapor light and your feeding a lot of mice you shouldn't have to worry about the dust to often at all. I’m sure lizards can probably get some what stunted but you can’t expect everything to go perfect.
