Selecting a Breeder to buy from

AZRaptor Sep 15, 2004 02:41 AM

I know there are several reputable breeders here on this forum, and if it came to it would feel very comfortable buying from you once new clutches are available. (Even though the idea of shipping and animal makes me shudder.) This being said, does anyone know of a reputable Eastern Indigo breeder located in Arizona?

If there is one, I'd like to look into it further as I have seen others comment on how convenient and helpful it is to have the breeder near by.

If not, I'll be looking towards a youngin from one of you fine people.

Having the breeder in state is definitely nice. It makes permits easier and it's nice to have a friendly breeder nearby.

One female Eastern Indigo. That's right, just one snake. But she's my dream-snake, so back off man.

i agree with josh; however, i am unaware of any breeders in arizona. check out indigosnakes.com for a listing of excellent breeders...most of us are out this year, however, if you get on the list early, you should have some luck with most of the folks listed. as far as red-tailed hawks go, i keep raptors as well and love working with them. but since you are in arizona, why not try a harris' hawk? good luck. rob carmichael....my shift key doesn't work so everything is in small caps

Once started I will probably move to a Harris at one point, but in Arizona the only two raptors a falconer can start with as an apprentice, per the state and licensing, is a Red Tail or a Kestrel (go figure.)

Now by the time I have a place with more land where I can build my mews I may be able to have a different raptor as my starter, but I don't think its allowed first year.

a red tail is the way to go then. they are fantastic hunting birds due to their varied preferences for prey items. my 10 year old red tail is still my favorite raptor to this day. good luck
