Released wood froglets - bittersweet!

kimhotep Jun 26, 2003 10:40 AM

Well I thought it'd be best to let the last two go, Peachy & Lyle if you recall - wood froglets that I raised from eggs gathered back in April. We're moving next week, & I didn't want to take them 20 miles away where water will be different. I felt bad catching them to transport outside; they'd come to trust my hand entering the tank, & I'd even hand-fed one of them a tiny cricket. I felt by chasing them around & scaring them, I was betraying them...but it's all for the good. They went their 2 separate ways when I released them off the path in the woods, near the creek. Within two hops they were invisible in the debris & undergrowth. I hope no one eats them; I've seen garters stalking wood frogs in the grassy clearing.

I console myself with the fact that there will surely be many interesting creatures to be found on the 10 wooded acres to which we are moving We're right adjacent to the protected reservoir area, so wildlife is healthy there. Good chance we'll even see bald eagles - they're very successful there!

I know how you feel. i let my last four wood froglets go a few days ago. they were skittish little things anyway. i think it is best for them, they were basically a rescue case because the puddle their eggs were laid in did indeed dry up. i know, the second you release them they seem to just vanish. i saw a large female when i let them go; hopefully they are not cannibalistic

Sadly they are. I used to have about ten of them and they never actually ate each other. but they tried.

I had several females full of eggs. I knew they would breed, and got impatient and let them go. I thinl around 6 weeks later when rains started I heard hundred of frogs croaking. I should have kept them until they layed eggs. One of the females was so fat, I couldn't believe it.

IMO, you should not have released them. In fact, in many states it is illegal to realease animals that have been in captivity for (sometimes) any amount of time. Not to mention anything they could have picked up in captivity. But, sorry you for your "loss" though they may be happier out there. Good luck to you, though in the future I do not think water composition is a legit. reason to release them or most of the CB frogs in the US would not be alive today(Not criticizing...just informing). I let them go where I caught them you dummy. I only had them for a couple of weeks. How would it be illegal to release something you caught, where you caught it?

snakeguy88 Jun 30, 2003 12:11 AM

Dummy? What is that for? I was giving you some insight. It would be illegal since animals can pick up pathogens. These pathogens could decimate whole populations. Check your state laws. And as well, you have been hand feeding them. I mean...if you are going to let an animal go down the line, the whole point is to have minimum animal to human interaction. Not once did I act rude toward you. I simply told you what I would have done based on STATE LAWS. Andy

I never said I was hand feeding them. Either way I have a permit.

snakeguy88 Jun 30, 2003 12:35 AM

What is this permit for? Andy

Dummy!!! The supreme Andy has been called a name, what a switch. Will humanity survive? Chill out man, it's only his opinion. You have plenty of opinions, and express them using any words you wish, so may he. Get over yourself. I think that although you are very knowledgable, and I have learned a lot from you over the last year I've followed the forum, you can be rude in your replies. Some of your replies to wkdrake, although well intentioned and factual, were rude and uncalled for. Learn some people skills.

snakeguy88 Jun 30, 2003 12:38 AM

That was not rude...I gave them my opinion and labeled it so. I told them what I would do based on state law. I can not find anything wrong with that. No wonder markc left...Andy

As for wkdrake, you could not understand. I have been on this forum for years, watched mixed tanks failed, had my own mixed tanks fail, ect. It is something I feel strongly about. In my posts, much like markc, I tell it like it is. What I said to kungfu did not warrant a "dummy" though. I have been called names before, if you were here long enough to remember which I highly doubt you have been. In fact, this same thing happens about once or twice a year. Everyone gets fed up with me, I leave, and people still come to me for my opinion. I could leave the forum today and never come back if I did not care to. I just sometimes enjoy reading the threads, though I post something like 10x less than I used to. I leave the posting to the newbloods, but I jump in when I can. And do you not realize that everyone is someone's subordinate? I visit many other forums and in very few am I anyone to have an opinion. I know the protocol, I understand the formalities. But I post as I think is necessary. So what is done is done and lets get on with life. Though I still can not make heads or tails of your post. Loaded sarcasm...gotta love it. Andy

Yeah, this forum should be happy that there are a few really knowledgable people left on it. Anyone who resorts to name calling should be on the aol kids forums. Then again, even the kids on there would be too mature for them.

I wouldn't resort to **** if my life depended on it. AOL is stupid.

snakeguy88 Jun 30, 2003 12:54 AM

Not only that but this is part of my reply...seems fairly compassionate to me...

hey there doesnt have to be any name calling. Andy is right; letting formerly captive frogs go caan be bad for the wild population. i had mine in an enclosed outdoor pond for observation. He meant if you had them indoors or in a tank or something. They could either spread germs from your tapwater or enclosure, or get killed due to not being fearful of predators, due to associating humans with food.
