Uro life spans

purduecg Sep 15, 2004 11:58 AM

Does anyone have any information regarding the average life span of Uros in captivity? When I first got my Mali 6 years ago I was told anywhere from 15-60 years. It seemed, as the range suggests, that people were just guessing. I am curious if there is any more reliable information out there now.

I really wish there was more scientific documentation on the Uromastyx! (particularly in English)

I agree with you, I wish there was more information too, particularly studies of wild populations...the closest I've seen to this is on Uronature.com, where a couple of Israeli park rangers kept tabs on a population of wild ornates; but even that study only lasted like a year or two and wasn't really exhaustive...

I read that the longevity record (for Moroccans)was, I think, 23 years (or maybe it was 25...somewhere in the 20's) for a pair that was living in a zoo..I have no idea if they're still alive or if they were babies when they were first caught..most of what I've read recently says 20-25 years for a lifespan...again, not sure what that's based on...

If you go to the Uromastyx Home Page and click on Urolinks, it will come up there and you can access it that way...It's really interesting, I just wish there were more of it...

I heard that lifespans range anywhere from 10-50 years.

I'm really really really hoping mine lasts 50 years.
