Boa Breeder prices

nhboa Sep 15, 2004 12:49 PM

I have a question... I am looking to purchase a Boa from NERD, and was wondering two things... what kind of quality are they, and second, it is a regular occurance for a snake breeder to charge two different prices based on if you pick it up at thier location or have it shipped? I was told that I would have to pay 70-100 dollars more if i pick it up at thier location over having it shipped. I live less than 15 miles away.... seems kind of a waste to have it shipped.... but i guess thats what i may have to do to get the better of the two prices....... thanks for replies...

I would advise them of my intent to purchase else where and then DO IT !
They do indeed have some good stock available, but theres quality species avalable else where that dont support their lofty aspirations.Let`em sell it to someone else.
Adviseing the public of questionable vendor practices is applauded.

If I may quote you, "lofty aspirations" and "questionable vendor practices" are FAR from the case here (see my reply to the original post below).

I do not understand how hard it is to comprehend the difference between retail market and wholesale/internet market. There is a BIG difference, there are many more costs involved in a retail store.

Of NERD reps around here, because we're typically all too busy taking care of animals to participate in forum drama/BS.

There's really nothing to explain - this fellow is basing his information based on an incident where a friend of his came in looking for an animal, and while he was quoted a base price on the phone for the species, the particular specimen available was worth significantly more. Guess they decided to blow things out of proportion from that point.

"Lofty aspirations?" - why don't you take your venom over to one of the hot forums rather than spewing it at a situation you know nothing about.

Just MY $.02

No, sorry...you know what they say about opinions...so I think nothing of yours.

People who post anonymously don't usually stack up to a hill of beans, anyway.

Actually, i had no idea i was opening a can of worms or anyhting, i was simply asking a question as to opinions is all. I am hardly flaming anyone... If you took it that way, so be it, honestly, i dont care. I was just asking if two prices for the same snake is a common thing.
As for my friend, he didnt get a price on a snake over the phone, he got a price for a snake when he came into the shop... then he called ont he phone and was quoted a price 75 more than what he had originally been told, and then he WENT into the store in the hopes that the owner would SEE his face and REMEMBER thier conversation.... so it wasnt a snake "sight unseen" that was worth "significantly more" as you say... it was teh same snake, just I guess with inflation over a period of a week went up 75 bucks.... Hell, i wish my stocks would go up that quickly.
Honetly though... I think the NERD snakes are great, I'm not taking anyhting away from them or thier snakes... I do intend on getting one, I just dont want to pay more JUST because i go into the store.
The reason told to me why it is a "retail / wholesale" thing is because and I quote... "if we sell a snake to a well known breeder and you talk to said breeder and tell him you got the same snake from us for less because you picked it up, he would be upset, and would go elsewhere" now all i wanted to know in starting this thread was is it my problem that he lives in another state and I dont? SHould i be penalised because i live in NH? i mean hell, if it would same me money, your more than welcome to ship it from Boston to Manchester for me.... No skin off my Butt.....
As far as blabbing about "who" I am... I'm not going to advertise who I am cause when the time comes, I'm not gonna have someone jacking up my price just because i brought this up... not that it would be done, but call me crazy, but If i'm gonna lay down 800 for a snake, you can bet your butt its gonna be WORTH it and not inflated because i questioned the company policy.

PBM Sep 15, 2004 08:37 PM

Not that I care that much, but I think you may have gotten some of the things Kara said to sslonestar as directed toward you. As far as pricing, this would be my own take, and I have no idea what their policies are. If I have a RETAIL store, and you come into my store to buy, say, a ball python. Well, I'm probably going to quote you RETAIL price of around.....80 bucks I guess. Now, if I also run a breeding business seperate from my retail store(which I THINK NERD does), and you come to me there, I would charge the "wholesale" price. Bottom line, go to a RETAIL store, and pay RETAIL. You can use this arguement with almost any item. For instance, if I buy parts/equipment for my motorcycle, you can almost bet I will save money by mail ordering from a company rather than going into a "retail store". I can mail order a tire for under 50 bucks. I can go to the local shop and pay 110.00 for the SAME tire. Well, good luck to you, take care!

Kevin and Kara (NERD) are far from the only people to price their animals in a manner like they do.

There is a big difference between prices on Kingsnake (or the net) and prices at a "store front".

NOT to sound like an ass, but people are more than welcome to buy elsewhere if they want. I personally have purchased from Kevin and/or Kara more than once........with that said (and I did have it shipped as I live in Az), I would have paid the retail price if I had to. Buying from them will give you the security of knowing EXACTLY what you are buying, what sex it is, healthy, and everything else one should look for in a snake rather than just a bargain.

There are pleanty of people out there that have snakes cheaper than NERD's "net" prices and will be far from the quality.

Be good!
