well im dragonsittin my cuz's drag, and about a week ago (when i got her) i saw this little cut like blister thing on her back. I asked him about it, he said her skin got torn offf too early from shed because another dragon got on top of her (his other female) wellll like...i was eying the blister this whole week, and ive decided this thing cannot wait. I scheduled a vet apptment (yeah, moneys tight and its not my drag, but hell, it cant suffer this way, and it could get infected) in a few days she will go, but i just wanted to post a pic of it to you all and see what you think...its been worrying the piss outta me lol. well thanks all, heres the pic!

Nice of you to get someone else's pet treated. Keep us posted on the outcome!

you definatly are doing right by getting her to the vet right now.... it could be a burn, it could be an infection, it could be something else, let us know how it turns out...

I use a few things on my beardie's skin to help fight infections. All of these will only do good, if there isn't an infection, the ointment will not hurt the dragon at all. First of all, see if you can get some Nolvasan ointment at a local feed store. The pet stores don't usually carry it - don't ask me why. Vets use this to disinfect wounds and they use it in a liquid form to sterilize their equipment. It smells great and even if the dragon eats it it is not harmful to them. It is actually used to treat mouth rot - you rub it on their gums. If you can't find any of that, use Aloe Vera gel or Neosporin. The Aloe will soothe any pain or burning, help to heal it faster, and it will prevent bacteria and fungus from growing. Aloe is also great for helping an area of skin to shed. Neosporin pretty much does the same thing. But Aloe wouldn't be harmful if injested by another dragon, of course it depends on how pure the gel is and what else is in it.

The best of luck to you on treating your friends dragon. It is mighty noble of you to take on this responsibility.

pet stores dont usually carry things that say on the box "for veterinary use only" feed stores do =] not sure if it says that, just an assumption, i know the majority of stuff we buy for the horses, wormers, topical meds etc we have to get at the feed store, although i was surprised to see the local petsmarts horse section carrying DMSO.. anyhow i ramble... good advice, but still be sure to get him to a vet so you know exactly what it is you are treating to be sure you are administering the correct treatment...

What I'd do...
UNtil you get to the vet clean with a cotton swab and some PLAN OLD listerine (like for your mouth you know). Just dab that on there and then rinse with water. They'll help. After put some neosporin on there. Just keep it clean like that 2x a day until you get to the vet.

The bacteria fighting power of listerine is in the alchohol. Alcohol is quite painful on wounds. I would use a slightly dilute betadine solution. Then follow with a layer of silvadine (preferred) or neosporin.

oh ok, all I know is that's what my vet recommends for infected and rot places. We use itat work when we have animals come in from dealers with mouth rot. Just dabbing it gently and rinsing clean.

I personally use Tetra-Fauna's old product "rid rot", I bought out the last of a store's supply about 4 years ago before it was discontinued. It's like betadine for reptiles really.

Looks a little deep, but pretty dry and clean otherwise... is it oozing at all? If there's an abcess, a vet can clean it out, perhaps admister some antibiotics if necessary... but as long as the dragon seems healthy otherwise, (basking, eating normally...)From what I can tell in the pic, it looks like it's healing up okay.

I am just not eyeing the area you pointed out, but also the area about an inch above it slightly to the right..... is it the photo or are the scales there also appearing different? kinka like a covering over them?

dmlove Jun 26, 2003 07:46 PM

the other dragon seemed to have torn the shedding skin off before it was ready, and it was VERY tender and he said it kind of bled, but he soaked it up and cleaned it, but it still looks like it should be looked at by a professional. Thanks guys!!

When I first looked at that picture, it looks very much like what "yellow fungus" looks like on the back of dragons, it affects the scales/skins and they lose them very easily once the fungus has gotten into the tissue surrounding the scales.

Just to be extra careful until you can have a vet check her out, do not let any other dragons in with here and also be careful to watch your hands on anything she comes into contact.

Just curious.... has she been on any medications for coccidia the last six months? or any dragon she has been in with?

CheriS Jun 26, 2003 08:49 PM

Here is a picture of another dragon that was just developing this fungus about in the same location. Also look to the left of the sore and note the fungus just starting to spead to another area of scales, you can see it clearly in this picture. If it is fungal, do not put any antibiotics on it, even topical ones, it accelerates the spread of it rapidly.

Under the picture is a link also to an article about it with several more pictures in varoius stages of it. There is also a group on the Yahoo Pogona_diseases that helps dragon owners that are dealing with this, there are several on there right now and you can read the post and also there are many pictures in the photo area.

Just for the record, in all my years of dealing with reptiles, especially bearded dragons, I have never seen or heard on one tearing off normal scales and skin from each other in early sheds.
