First Vet Visit

caredeocr Sep 15, 2004 06:08 PM

I have had my beardie for a week now and am bringing him to the vet on Friday. Is it too soon? Wait a couple weeks?

Thanks

He is 3 months old.

It's always good for a vet to see an animal while it is healthy for all intents and purposes. This helpes to establish a template of health for vets to compare. Read in alot of books on bearded dragons that vet checks with a healthy animal makes it easier to form a porfolio of that particular dragon to compare to when he does get sick. For instance if he is 12" when first brought to a vet and 4 months old then is brought back a month later and is still 12" then obviously something is not right as the dragon isn't growing as it should be when still young.

I would recommend bringing a fresh fecal with you as well so he can be checked for parasites. The vet trip will be a bit stressful but I suggest putting him in a box. Being in a dark secure place keeps the stress levels down. Just make sure you haven't fed him beforehand (a couple hours after last feeding is fine) so food won't sour in his tummy. Make sure he gets time basking after getting home.

If your beardie is not sick, it is very very very wise to give it a checkup. 3 months is not too soon! Please provide the vet with *fresh* samples of feces for microscopic examination.
You can call your vet first maybe that's all he would need for the time being.

If your beardie is sick, by all means the sooner the better. One of the most common causes of beardie illness is insufficient light/heat. IN addition to a UV light specially made for reptiles (desert), you need a regular light bulb. For the young one keep one side of the tank 100 degrees f, and the other side about 85-90 degrees. So keep thermometers both sides of the tank. It's easy to maintain heat especially with a THERMOSTATICALLY CONTROLLED under the tank heater.

baby bearides also eat A LOT--and very young crickets no larger than the size between your beardie's eyes. I can't remember but she ate maybe around 30 a day. but i can't swear to that number it's been years ago since she was a baby.
